Villas and stone country houses above the Rías Baixas, among Albariño vineyards and white Atlantic beaches
As featured in
Galicia does not fit the usual picture of Spain. The far northwest corner is green, granite and Celtic, with bagpipes at the village fiesta, stone granaries on stilts in the gardens and a coastline broken into deep sea inlets called rías. The light is soft, the summers are warm rather than scorching, and the shellfish is about as good as anywhere in Europe.
Our Galician collection runs to 50+ properties. Most are in the province of Pontevedra, around Sanxenxo and the Rías Baixas, with more in the province of A Coruña. They range from beach houses and contemporary villas to old stone casas among the vines, and the largest has 11 bedrooms.
Below you will find where to stay, what to eat and when the region is at its best.

Rent Villa Portonovo Galicia Spain4 bedroomsSanxenxo and the Rías Baixas for beaches and Albariño, Pontevedra and A Estrada for stone country houses and old Galicia, and A Coruña and Outes for the wilder northern coast and easy reach of Santiago.

The Rías Baixas are the four southern rías of Galicia, and their calm water and fine white sand make this the region's main summer coast. Sanxenxo is its liveliest resort, with a marina and the town beach of Silgar, while neighbouring Portonovo is still a working fishing port. Just beyond them, the long dune beach of A Lanzada faces the open Atlantic.
Across the water is O Grove, famous for shellfish, and a short drive inland is Cambados, the small stone town at the heart of Albariño country. Ferries run in summer to the Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, where the beaches look more Caribbean than Iberian.

Pontevedra has one of the best-kept old towns in Spain: granite squares, arcaded streets and a centre almost entirely given over to people on foot. It makes a good base between the coast and the hills, and most of our Galician villas are in this province.
Inland, the country turns to chestnut woods, vineyards and the old manor houses known as pazos. Around A Estrada, the hamlet of Sabucedo holds the Rapa das Bestas each July, when the wild horses are brought down from the hills to have their manes cut. It is noisy, ancient and unlike anything else in Europe.

A Coruña is a handsome Atlantic city of glassed-in balconies, with the Tower of Hercules on its headland. This Roman lighthouse is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is still in use. To the west, the Costa da Morte runs out towards Cape Finisterre, rugged and spectacular in any weather.
Between the two lies Santiago de Compostela, where the pilgrim routes end at the cathedral in a UNESCO-listed old town. Villas around Outes, on the quiet Ría de Muros e Noia, put both the city and the wilder coast within an easy drive.

Galicians eat extremely well and see no reason to fuss about it. Expect pulpo á feira, boiled octopus with paprika and olive oil on a wooden plate, alongside razor clams, goose barnacles, empanada, Padrón peppers and tarta de Santiago, all washed down with crisp Albariño.
The summer runs from June to September. The Festa do Albariño fills Cambados in the week leading up to the first Sunday of August, Santiago celebrates its patron saint on 25 July, and O Grove holds its shellfish festival in October. Rain is part of the deal outside summer, which is why the region stays so green. Our concierge can book wine tours, boat trips, restaurant tables and a private chef.

Albariño winery tours, boat trips on the rías and to the Cíes Islands, seafood restaurant reservations, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Santiago and Vigo. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Sanxenxo and the Rías Baixas are best for beaches, sailing and Albariño vineyards. Pontevedra and its hinterland suit those who want stone country houses and a quieter pace. A Coruña and Outes are good for the wilder northern coast and easy trips to Santiago de Compostela.
June to September brings the warmest weather and the best beach days. Late July and early August are lively, with Santiago's feast on 25 July and the Albariño festival in Cambados. Spring and autumn are greener and quieter, but expect some rain.
