The province of Pontevedra is the south-western corner of Galicia. This is the Rías Baixas, where long sea inlets reach deep into wooded hills and every bend of the coast seems to have a fishing harbour, a scallop of white sand and a bar serving octopus. It is green because it rains, cool when the rest of Spain is baking, and its white wine, Albariño, is among the best in the country.

Sand, granite and islands offshore
Sanxenxo is the summer capital of the Rías Baixas, with a marina, a long town beach at Silgar and Praia de Lourido stretching towards the fishing port of Portonovo. In season, boats leave here for the island of Ons, where there are no cars and the beaches are wild.
Across the ría, Combarro has a row of granite hórreos, the raised stone granaries of Galicia, lined up along the water's edge. Further south lie the Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, whose Praia de Rodas looks like somewhere a good deal further south. Visitor numbers are limited in summer, so it is worth planning ahead.
An old town for walking, and wild horses in the hills
Pontevedra itself is a small granite city whose old centre has been largely handed over to pedestrians since the late 1990s. Spend an evening wandering its arcaded squares, the shell-shaped chapel of A Peregrina and the tapas bars around Praza da Leña. It is also a stop on the Portuguese Way of the Camino to Santiago.
Inland the country turns quiet and wooded. The archaeological park at Campo Lameiro preserves Bronze Age rock carvings, and near A Estrada stands the Pazo de Oca, with its gardens and ponds. Every year, on the first weekend of July, Sabucedo holds the Rapa das Bestas: wild horses are brought down from the hills and the aloitadores trim their manes by hand.
A royal harbour and the Portuguese border
Baiona has a fortified headland, now a parador, and a strong claim to history: in 1493 the caravel Pinta put in here, carrying the first news of Columbus's landfall in the Americas. The town marks the event every March with the Festa da Arribada, held over the first weekend of the month.
South of here the River Miño forms the border with Portugal. Tui has a fortress-like cathedral looking across to Valença, and at A Guarda the Celtic hill fort on Monte Santa Trega overlooks the river mouth. Vineyards of the O Rosal and Condado do Tea subzones climb the slopes in between.

Albariño, octopus and a cool summer
This is one of the great seafood coasts of Europe. Mussels are farmed on the wooden rafts that dot the rías, and you will find pulpo á feira, scallops, razor clams and percebes on every menu, with empanada never far away. Cambados, in the Val do Salnés, is the home of Albariño, and its Festa do Albariño fills the town in the days leading to the first Sunday of August.
