Sea-view villas and apartments around Ortigia, the Plemmirio coast and the sandy beaches to the south
As featured in
Syracuse was once the greatest city of the Greek world. It defeated the Athenian fleet in 413 BC, gave the world Archimedes, and Cicero thought it the most beautiful Greek city of all. Its oldest quarter, Ortigia, is a small island joined to the mainland by bridges. The cathedral there is built around the Doric columns of a Temple of Athena, and papyrus grows in a freshwater spring a few steps from the sea.
Our Syracuse collection runs to 120+ villas and apartments. There are sea-view apartments in and around Ortigia, villas with pools on the Plemmirio peninsula and houses along the sandy coast at Fontane Bianche, and the largest has 10 bedrooms.
Here is how to choose your corner of it, and when to come.

Ortigia is small enough to cross on foot in a quarter of an hour, and you can easily spend a week there. Piazza Duomo is one of the finest squares in Sicily, pale and baroque, and it glows gold in the late afternoon. Nearby, the Fountain of Arethusa is a freshwater pool full of papyrus and ducks on the edge of the harbour. The morning market is where the city buys its fish and lemons.
On the mainland, the Neapolis archaeological park holds the Greek Theatre, cut from the hillside, and the cave known as the Ear of Dionysius. The Paolo Orsi museum is one of the best archaeological collections in Italy. Together with the necropolis of Pantalica inland, Syracuse has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

South of the city, the Maddalena peninsula curves out into the Ionian. Its waters form the Plemmirio marine protected area, where low limestone cliffs drop into clear water that is very good for snorkelling. The swimming here is from rocks and ladders rather than sand. Bring sturdy sandals and take a long lunch afterwards.
This is where many of our villas with sea views and pools are found, around Plemmirio and the neighbouring area of Isola. Both are a short drive from Ortigia, so a morning swim and dinner in town fit easily into the same day. The lighthouse at Capo Murro di Porco, at the tip of the peninsula, is the place to watch the light fade.

For sand, head south. Fontane Bianche has a long curve of pale beach and shallow, clear water, and it is the city's favourite place for a summer swim. Further down the coast, Reitani, near San Lorenzo in the countryside of Noto, has a wide sandy beach that shelves gently. That makes it a good choice for families with young children.
From here, the Vendicari nature reserve, with its flamingos and empty beaches, and the fishing village of Marzamemi are close by. The baroque town of Noto makes a fine evening out.

Syracuse takes breakfast seriously. In summer that means almond or lemon granita with a warm brioche. Later in the day come Pachino tomatoes, swordfish, almonds from Avola and a glass of sweet Moscato di Siracusa.
Each spring and early summer, the Greek Theatre stages ancient tragedies under the open sky, as it has for more than a century. In 2026 the season ran from 8 May to 28 June. July and August are hot and busy, and September and October bring a warm sea and quieter streets. On 13 December the city carries its patron, Saint Lucy, through the streets. Our concierge can secure theatre tickets, arrange boat trips around Ortigia and book tables in town.
