Villas among the carob trees and dry-stone walls of south east Sicily, between baroque hill towns and a sandy coast
As featured in
In 1693 an earthquake flattened south east Sicily. Ragusa rebuilt itself twice: a new town on the ridge above, and Ibla on the old site below, where the rebuilding produced some of the finest baroque streets in Europe. Ibla, together with nearby Modica and Scicli, is now part of the UNESCO-listed Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.
Our Ragusa collection runs to 80+ properties across the province, from apartments in restored palazzi in Ibla to beachside villas near Marina di Ragusa and large country houses set among olive and carob groves, many with private pools.
Here is how the area divides up, and when to come.

Villa Amaranto SanGiovanni Ragusa: Luxury 4-Bedroom Villa with Private Pool – Ragusa4 bedroomsRagusa Ibla for baroque streets and good restaurants, Modica and Scicli for smaller towns of the same vintage, Marina di Ragusa and Sampieri for the beach, and the countryside between them for space and quiet.

Ragusa Ibla sits on its own spur of rock, and the long flights of steps down from the upper town are the best way to arrive. At the top of a sloping piazza stands the Duomo di San Giorgio, Rosario Gagliardi's eighteenth-century masterpiece, and at the far end of the old town the Giardino Ibleo looks out over the valley.
Modica, a short drive away, spills down two ravines and makes grainy, cold-worked chocolate to an old recipe. Scicli is smaller and quieter still, with a single street, Via Mormino Penna, lined with churches and palazzi.

Ragusa's coast is softer than much of Sicily's, with long sandy beaches and shallow water that suits children. Marina di Ragusa has a seafront promenade, a marina and an easy evening passeggiata. Just west, Punta Secca is the little fishing hamlet where Inspector Montalbano's seaside house was filmed.
East towards Sampieri the beaches grow wilder, overlooked by the ruined brick kiln of the Fornace Penna. Further west, the remains of ancient Kamarina, a Greek colony, stand above the sea, and the mouth of the Irminio river is a protected nature reserve of dunes and Mediterranean scrub.

Inland, the Hyblaean plateau is crossed by miles of dry-stone walls enclosing pasture, olives and ancient carob trees. Many of our larger villas are old farmhouses here, a short drive from both the towns and the beach, which is the great appeal of staying in the country.
The Castello di Donnafugata, a grand nineteenth-century country house southwest of Ragusa, has period rooms and a garden with a stone maze. Between Modica and Ispica, the Cava d'Ispica is a long limestone gorge riddled with prehistoric tombs and cave dwellings, and makes a good morning's walk.

The local food is hearty and unfussy: scaccia, a folded flatbread stuffed with tomato, cheese or aubergine; Ragusano, a firm cow's milk cheese with protected status; and Modica's 'mpanatigghi, small pastries filled with minced meat and chocolate. Vittoria, to the west, produces Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only DOCG wine, from Nero d'Avola and Frappato.
Spring and autumn are the best months for the towns and the countryside. July and August are hot and busy on the coast. Easter is memorable in Modica, where the statues of Christ and the Virgin meet in the Vasa Vasa procession. Our concierge can book wine tastings, chocolate workshops and tables in Ibla.

Ragusa Ibla suits couples who want to walk to dinner through baroque streets. Families often prefer a villa near Marina di Ragusa or Sampieri for the sandy beaches, and the countryside between the towns gives the most space and privacy, with both coast and towns within a short drive.
May, June, September and October are the most comfortable months for sightseeing and walking, with the sea warm enough for swimming from June. July and August are best for the beach but hot inland and busy on the coast.
Much of the television series was filmed in the province of Ragusa. Ragusa Ibla and Modica stand in for parts of Vigàta, the town hall in Scicli became the police station, and the inspector's seaside house is in Punta Secca, near Marina di Ragusa.
