Plane trees, olive groves and the light that kept Van Gogh painting

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a small market town ringed by plane-shaded boulevards, set at the northern foot of the Alpilles, a low, pale limestone chain that rises from the plain between Avignon and Arles. Nostradamus was born here in 1503. Van Gogh spent a year here at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, and the olive groves and cypresses he painted are still in the fields outside town.

Our Saint-Rémy collection runs to 150+ properties. There are restored stone mas with shuttered windows and fireplaces, contemporary villas with heated pools and spas, and a handful of country châteaux large enough for a family gathering or a wedding party. Most sit in their own gardens among olives and lavender, a short drive or a pleasant walk from the old town.

This guide covers the town, the Alpilles and when to come.

Explore Saint-Rémy and the Alpilles

Saint-Rémy itself for the market, restaurants and an evening stroll, the Alpilles villages of Les Baux and Paradou for olive groves and walking, and Arles and Avignon for Roman and papal history within half an hour.

The Town

Fountains, galleries and a Wednesday market

The old centre of Saint-Rémy is compact and best explored on foot: narrow lanes of honey-coloured stone, small squares with fountains, antique shops, galleries and cafés spilling onto the pavement. On Wednesday mornings the market takes over the streets, with stalls of olives, goat's cheese, Provençal linens and straw baskets.

The Musée Estrine, in an eighteenth-century town house, has a centre devoted to Van Gogh, and the lane where Nostradamus was born is a few steps away. On summer evenings the town stays out late, and dinner on a terrace under the plane trees is very much the point of being here.

Van Gogh & Glanum

A painter's year and a Roman town

Van Gogh admitted himself to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in May 1889 and stayed a year, painting the olive groves, wheat fields and the Alpilles at a remarkable pace. The Starry Night was painted here. The cloister and a reconstruction of his room are open to visitors, and a signed walk leads through the fields he painted.

Next door lie the ruins of Glanum, a Greek and then Roman town, and beside the road stand Les Antiques, a mausoleum and triumphal arch that have survived two thousand years in very good order. Arles, with its Roman arena and its own Van Gogh connections, is around half an hour away.

The Alpilles

Limestone ridges, olive mills and Les Baux

The Alpilles are a regional natural park, a ridge of white rock, pine and garrigue that is excellent walking country in spring and autumn. Les Baux-de-Provence, a ruined castle and village on a rocky spur, is a short and spectacular drive over the hills, and the Carrières des Lumières, in a former quarry below, projects large-scale art shows onto its walls.

Around Maussane and Paradou the land is given over to olives, and the mills sell oil from the Vallée des Baux appellation. Eygalières, to the east, is a quiet hilltop village with good restaurants and a loyal following among those who know the area.

Food, Wine & the Seasons

Olive oil, Les Baux wines and a parade of sheep

The table here is simple and very good: lamb from the Alpilles, tapenade, asparagus in spring, melons from nearby Cavaillon in summer, and reds and rosés from the Les Baux-de-Provence vineyards, several of them organic. On Whit Monday the Fête de la Transhumance sends thousands of sheep, goats and donkeys around the town's boulevards, led by shepherds in traditional dress.

May, June and September are the most comfortable months. July and August are hot, busy and lively, and the mistral can blow at any time of year, usually clearing the sky as it goes. Our concierge can arrange wine and olive oil tastings, a private chef, restaurant tables, guided walks and transfers.
