Apartments around Michelangelo's David, in the scholarly, slightly calmer quarter north of the Duomo
As featured in
Most visitors come to the Accademia for one reason: Michelangelo's David, which has stood in the Galleria dell'Accademia since 1873. Once they have queued, looked up and left, the quarter goes back to being one of the more lived-in corners of the historic centre. It has university buildings, convent cloisters, a botanic garden and two of the finest squares in Florence, and it is only a few minutes' walk north of the Duomo.
Our Accademia collection runs to 50+ apartments. They range from one-bedroom flats for a couple to family apartments with terraces and balconies, and a few grand floors in old palazzi with frescoed ceilings and room for up to 12 guests.
Below is a short guide to the neighbourhood, what to see and when to come.

Michelangelo carved the David between 1501 and 1504, and it stood outside the Palazzo Vecchio for more than three centuries before it was moved indoors. Seeing it at the end of its long gallery, at more than five metres tall, is still worth the queue.
Take your time on the way there, too. The unfinished Prisoners line the approach, half-freed from their blocks, and say more about how Michelangelo worked than any guidebook could. The gallery also holds a fine collection of musical instruments. It is closed on Mondays, and timed tickets booked in advance save a long wait on Via Ricasoli.

Around the corner, the old Dominican convent of San Marco is now a museum. Fra Angelico painted its friars' cells, one fresco to each, and his Annunciation at the top of the stairs is one of the quietest and loveliest things in Florence. Savonarola was prior here.
A short walk east, Piazza della Santissima Annunziata is framed by arcades. One side is Brunelleschi's Ospedale degli Innocenti, begun in 1419 and often called the first building of the Renaissance, with Andrea della Robbia's roundels of swaddled infants along the loggia. Giambologna's equestrian Ferdinando I watches over it all.

The tour groups thin out by early evening, which makes the Accademia a good base for anyone who wants to be central without sleeping above a piazza full of bars. The Giardino dei Semplici, a botanic garden founded by Cosimo I in 1545, is a pleasant green pause, and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure shows off Florence's old craft of inlaid stone.
The Duomo is a few minutes' walk to the south, and the Mercato Centrale at San Lorenzo is close by for morning shopping. Santa Croce and the river are an easy stroll beyond.

Florentine food is direct and generous: bistecca alla fiorentina cooked rare, ribollita in the cooler months, and lampredotto, a tripe sandwich, from the stalls around the Mercato Centrale for the brave. Schiacciata, the salty local flatbread, makes a good lunch on the move.
Spring and early autumn are the best times to come. July and August are hot and busy, and some Florentines leave the city in August. On the evening of 7 September the Rificolona fills Santissima Annunziata with children carrying paper lanterns. Our concierge can book timed museum tickets, private guides, restaurant tables and transfers.
