Goldsmiths below, the Medici overhead, Florence on either side

The Ponte Vecchio has carried Florentines across the Arno since 1345, when it was rebuilt after a great flood. Its shops have been held by goldsmiths and jewellers since 1593, when Grand Duke Ferdinando I evicted the butchers, and in August 1944 it was the only bridge in the city that the retreating Germans left standing.

Stay here and you are at the hinge of Florence, with the Uffizi and Piazza della Signoria on one bank and the Oltrarno on the other. We have 60+ apartments around the bridge: flats in old palazzi a few streets from the Signoria, river-view apartments on the Lungarno, and quieter homes in the Oltrarno and San Niccolò, several with terraces or balconies, the largest with 5 bedrooms.

Below, a short guide to the two banks, the bridge itself and the right time to come.

Neighbouring quarters of Florence

The north bank for the Uffizi and Piazza della Signoria, the Oltrarno for Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito and the artisans' workshops, and San Niccolò for a village feel beneath Piazzale Michelangelo, with the Duomo and Santa Croce a short walk away.

Signoria, the Uffizi and a bronze boar

Step off the bridge on the city side and you are two minutes from Piazza della Signoria, where Palazzo Vecchio still serves as the town hall and the Loggia dei Lanzi shelters Cellini's Perseus. The Uffizi runs down to the river beside it.

A few paces up Via Por Santa Maria, the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo keeps its bronze boar, il Porcellino, whose snout is rubbed to a shine by visitors hoping to return. Apartments on this side suit first visits: the Duomo is around ten minutes on foot, and almost everything else is closer.

The Oltrarno

Workshops, Pitti and the climb to San Miniato

Across the river, Via Guicciardini leads straight to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens. To the west lies Santo Spirito, with Brunelleschi's church, a small morning market and the gilders, frame makers and restorers whose workshops still give the Oltrarno its character. Look out for the little buchette del vino, wine windows set into palazzo walls, a few of which serve a glass once more.

East of the bridge, San Niccolò is the quietest corner of the centre, with a medieval gate and a steep, rewarding walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte. Above it all, the hill of Bellosguardo looks back over the rooftops.

The Bridge Itself

A corridor for dukes, reopened to the rest of us

Look up as you cross. The Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 for Cosimo I de' Medici, runs along the top of the bridge for around 750 metres from the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti, so the ruling family never had to mingle with the street. Closed in 2016, it reopened in December 2024 after a long restoration, and visitors now leave it at the Boboli Gardens.

Halfway across, a bust of Benvenuto Cellini, patron saint of the goldsmiths below, presides over the open terraces. Come early in the morning or after the shops close, when the shutters are down and the view west to Ponte Santa Trinita is yours.

Food & the Seasons

Bistecca, lampredotto and fireworks in June

Florentine cooking is plain and generous: bistecca alla fiorentina served rare, ribollita in winter, pappa al pomodoro in summer, and lampredotto, tripe in a bread roll, from street carts for the brave. Finish with cantucci and Vin Santo.

Spring and autumn are the kindest months. July and August are hot and crowded. On Easter Sunday the Scoppio del Carro explodes outside the Duomo, the Calcio Storico is played in Piazza Santa Croce through June, ending on 24 June, the feast of San Giovanni, with fireworks over the Arno, and the lantern festival of the Rificolona falls on 7 September. Our concierge can secure museum tickets, guides and tables.

Why book your apartment in the Ponte Vecchio with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Within a few hundred metres of the bridge an apartment can face a silent courtyard or a street that hums until two in the morning, and we know which is which. With 60+ properties in the Ponte Vecchio, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Timed tickets for the Uffizi and the Vasari Corridor, private art historians, tables in the Oltrarno, cookery classes, day trips to Chianti and transfers from Florence and Pisa airports. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to stay north or south of the Ponte Vecchio?

The north bank puts you closest to the Uffizi, Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo, which suits a first visit. The Oltrarno, south of the river, is quieter and more local, with artisans' workshops, Santo Spirito and Palazzo Pitti, and San Niccolò is the calmest of all.

When is the best time to stay near the Ponte Vecchio?

April to early June and September to October bring warm days and fewer crowds. July and August are very hot and busy, while winter is quiet, cool and good for museums.

Can you walk through the Vasari Corridor?

Yes. The corridor reopened in December 2024 and is visited with a timed ticket, entering from the Uffizi, crossing above the Ponte Vecchio and leaving at the Boboli Gardens. Places are limited, so our concierge can book them for you well ahead.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in the Ponte Vecchio?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in the Ponte Vecchio cost?

Across our 60+ properties in the Ponte Vecchio, weekly rates typically range from £2,800 to £5,500, with the most affordable from around £2,200 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to the Ponte Vecchio from the airport?

Florence airport is around 20 minutes by taxi, and Pisa airport around 75 minutes by road. Florence's main station, Santa Maria Novella, is roughly a 15 minute walk from the bridge. Much of the centre is closed to unauthorised traffic, so our concierge can arrange transfers to your door.

Are there apartments in the Ponte Vecchio for large groups?

Yes. Our Ponte Vecchio collection includes properties with up to 5 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
