Villas in Avignon

A papal city on the Rhône, with Provence on its doorstep

For most of the fourteenth century the popes lived in Avignon, not Rome, and they left behind the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe, inside around four kilometres of city walls. Today the historic centre, the palace and the broken Pont Saint-Bénezet are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every July the city gives itself over to theatre.

Our Avignon collection runs to 70+ villas, and most sit out in the countryside the city commands: old farmhouses and stone mas around Pernes-les-Fontaines and Le Beaucet, family houses in the Luberon near Lauris and Apt, and villas among the olive groves of the Alpilles. The largest have 16 bedrooms.

Here is how the country around Avignon divides up, and when it is at its best.

Where to stay in Avignon

Pernes-les-Fontaines and Le Beaucet for easy reach of the city, the Luberon villages for hilltop views and markets, and the Alpilles for olive groves, Les Baux and Saint-Rémy.

The City

Popes, ramparts and a covered market

Avignon is best seen on foot, inside the walls. The Palais des Papes is vast and rather austere, and the Rocher des Doms garden above it looks over the Rhône to the four arches left of the Pont Saint-Bénezet. Across the river, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon has Fort Saint-André and a quieter feel.

Les Halles, the covered market behind its living green wall, is the place to start a morning. In July the Festival d'Avignon, founded by Jean Vilar in 1947, puts productions in the Cour d'Honneur of the palace, while the Off fills small theatres all over town. Rooms are scarce then, which is one more reason to stay in a villa out in the countryside.

Le Beaucet & the Luberon

Fountains, perched villages and ochre

East of the city, Pernes-les-Fontaines is a quiet little town known for its many fountains, and above it Le Beaucet clings to a rock beneath the ruins of its castle. Both are close enough for an evening at the festival and far enough to sleep in peace.

Further on lie the Monts de Vaucluse and the Luberon: Gordes and Murs on their hillsides, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, the spring at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and the Sunday antiques market at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Villas near Lauris and Apt put Lourmarin and the Luberon's market towns within easy reach.

The Alpilles

Olive oil, limestone and Van Gogh

South of Avignon the small, pale range of the Alpilles rises out of olive groves and vineyards. Maussane-les-Alpilles and Paradou are known for their olive oil, and Les Baux-de-Provence sits on its spur of rock with the Carrières des Lumières, a former quarry filled with projected art, just below.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has a busy Wednesday market and the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh painted some of his best-known work in 1889 and 1890. Between Avignon and the Alpilles, the low hills of the Montagnette hide the abbey of Saint-Michel de Frigolet.

Food, Wine & the Seasons

Châteauneuf, Ventoux and a long table

The popes planted vines at Châteauneuf-du-Pape, around twenty minutes north, and the Côtes du Rhône and Ventoux vineyards surround the city. Summer brings melons from Cavaillon, cherries from the Monts de Vaucluse and long lunches of tapenade, lamb and goat's cheese.

Late spring and September are the sweetest months, warm but not fierce. July brings the festival and the lavender, and August can be very hot. Watch for the mistral, which can blow cold and hard for days. Our concierge can book wine tastings, festival tickets, a private chef, market tours and transfers.

Why book your Avignon villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Our Avignon villas are spread across the Vaucluse plain, the Luberon and the Alpilles, and we know which are an easy drive from the city on a festival night and which are best for long, quiet days. With 70+ properties in Avignon, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Festival d'Avignon tickets, Châteauneuf-du-Pape tastings, a private chef, market and antiques tours at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, car hire and transfers from Avignon TGV or Marseille. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
