Villas among the pines and rice fields of Comporta, with Atlantic beaches on one side and cork oak country on the other
As featured in
The Alentejo covers about a third of Portugal and holds a small share of its people. Its name means 'beyond the Tagus', and it feels that way: rolling plains of cork oak and olive, whitewashed villages with blue and yellow trim, and a coastline of long, empty beaches. On the coast, rice fields run up to the dunes and storks nest on chimney tops.
Our Alentejo collection runs to 60+ properties, most of them on the coast around Comporta, Carvalhal, Pego and Melides. You will find low-slung contemporary villas in the pines, houses with sea views and pools, and a few large country estates inland, the biggest with 14 bedrooms.
Below is a guide to the coast, the interior and the best time to come.

Comporta made its name as the place Lisbon's creative crowd came to hide, and it has kept a deliberately low-key look: reed-roofed cabanas, sandy lanes and beach restaurants where lunch takes most of the afternoon. Carvalhal, Pego and Melides run south along the same long beach, each a little quieter than the last.
At Carrasqueira, a wooden fishermen's harbour stands on stilts in the mud of the Sado estuary, and it is one of the most photographed sights on the coast at sunset.

Alcácer do Sal climbs a hill above the Sado river, with a castle at the top and cafés along the water. It is one of the oldest towns in Portugal and makes a good morning out from the coast.
The Sado estuary is a nature reserve, home to flamingos and a resident population of bottlenose dolphins. Boat trips run from Setúbal, and the car ferry from Setúbal across to Tróia is the pleasant way to reach Comporta from Lisbon.

Inland, Évora is a walled university city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a Roman temple at its centre and the Capela dos Ossos, a chapel lined with human bones, beside the church of São Francisco. Further east, the hilltop village of Monsaraz looks out over the vast Alqueva reservoir, where the night skies are dark enough for serious stargazing.
Between them lie cork oak plantations, olive groves and wine estates, many of which welcome visitors for tastings.

The Alentejo eats generously and simply: porco preto, the acorn-fed black pork, migas and açorda made from bread, garlic and coriander, and rice from the paddies of Comporta. Its wines are among Portugal's best known, and some producers still make wine the Roman way in large clay amphorae called talhas.
June to September is beach season on the coast, while inland summers are fiercely hot. Spring brings wildflowers and autumn the grape harvest. Our concierge can arrange winery visits, dolphin trips, horse riding on the beach and restaurant tables.

With 60+ properties in the Alentejo, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Transfers from Lisbon, car hire, winery visits, dolphin trips on the Sado, horse riding on the beach, private chefs and beach restaurant reservations. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Comporta and Carvalhal are best for beaches, beach restaurants and a relaxed social scene. Pego and Melides are quieter, and Évora and the countryside inland suit those more interested in history, wine and walking.
Fly to Lisbon. Comporta is around an hour or a little more by road, or you can take the car ferry from Setúbal to Tróia. Évora is around an hour and a half from Lisbon. Our concierge can arrange transfers and car hire.
It is the region's traditional unaccompanied group singing, slow and deep, once sung by farm workers in the fields. UNESCO added it to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014, and you can still hear it in village taverns and at local festivals.
