Quarteira is where the Portuguese go on holiday in the Algarve, and that tells you most of what you need to know. It began as a fishing village, the boats still land their catch at the eastern end of town, and a long sandy beach runs the length of a palm-lined promenade. You will hear more Portuguese than English at lunch, which is usually a good sign for the grilled fish.

Quarteira's seafront for the beach, the fish market and local life, Vilamoura for the marina and golf, and Vale do Lobo and Almancil to the east for the most exclusive villas.
The promenade, the fish market and Wednesday mornings
Quarteira's seafront promenade, known locally as the Calçadão, stretches for around two kilometres beside the beach, lined with palms, cafés and fish restaurants. It stays lively well out of season.
At the western end stand the town's two whitewashed market halls, one for fruit and vegetables and one for fish, where the stalls sell whatever the boats landed that morning. Get there early, because the best of it goes fast. On Wednesday mornings a big open-air market sets up on the edge of town, with produce, cork, linen and a lot of cheerful haggling.

Yachts, Roman ruins and five golf courses
Vilamoura sits within Quarteira's parish and is about a twenty-minute walk west along the seafront. The mood changes quickly. The marina is lined with yachts, smart restaurants and boutiques, and the resort's golf courses, the Old Course and the Victoria among them, have long drawn serious golfers.
Just beside the marina, the Roman site of Cerro da Vila has the remains of a villa, baths and mosaics, with a small museum. Most of our larger villas are here, among the fairways and quiet residential streets.

Towards Vale do Lobo, and up to Loulé
East of town the beach carries on towards Vale do Lobo, with its clifftop golf and red sandstone bluffs, and then on to Quinta do Lago and the Ria Formosa. Villas on this side of Quarteira put you close to both the town and the Golden Triangle.
Inland, the market town of Loulé is a short drive away. Its Moorish-style market hall is busiest on Saturday mornings, its carnival in February is one of the oldest in the Algarve, and its old streets are full of craft workshops.

Sardines in summer, golf in autumn
Seafood is what Quarteira does best. Order dourada or sardines straight off the grill, octopus in many forms, and arroz de marisco, a soupy seafood rice best shared from the pot. Some restaurants near the market will cook what you have just bought there.
The beach is busiest in July and August, when Portuguese families fill the town. June and September are warm, a little calmer and very good value for time on the sand, and spring and autumn suit golf and walks along the coast.
