Arles sits on the Rhône where Provence starts to flatten into the Camargue. It has a Roman amphitheatre that still holds crowds, a Romanesque cloister and a Saturday market that fills the boulevard des Lices. Van Gogh painted here for fifteen restless months in 1888 and 1889. The town has never quite got over him, and has never really tried.

Arles itself for its Roman and Romanesque monuments, the Camargue to the south for wetlands and white horses, and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and the Alpilles villages for country mas among the olive groves.
Arenas, cloisters and a yellow café
The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles are listed by UNESCO. The amphitheatre, built in the first century, still hosts bullfighting and the Camargue-style races in which the bull is never killed. Nearby are the Roman theatre, the Alyscamps necropolis and the carved portal and cloister of Saint-Trophime.
Van Gogh fans will find the café on the Place du Forum and the courtyard garden of the old hospital where he was treated. The Fondation Vincent van Gogh shows his work on loan, since Arles kept none of the paintings he made here. The newer landmark is the twisting metal tower of LUMA Arles, designed by Frank Gehry.

Flamingos, white horses and rice fields
South of the town, the Rhône splits in two and the land gives way to marsh, lagoons and salt pans. This is the Camargue, home to flamingos, black bulls and the white horses ridden by the gardians, the local cowboys. It is best seen early in the morning, on horseback or from the paths of the Pont de Gau bird park.
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, at the end of the road, has long sandy beaches and a fortified church. The salt pans at Salin-de-Giraud turn a surprising shade of pink in late summer. A villa on the Arles side puts all of this within an easy drive.

Limestone hills and village markets
Most of our houses are in the countryside towards Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, below the pale limestone ridge of the Alpilles. Saint-Rémy has a busy Wednesday market, the Roman ruins of Glanum and the monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh painted after he left Arles.
Les Baux-de-Provence sits on its rock nearby, and the Carrières de Lumières runs projected art shows in an old quarry beneath it. Maillane, birthplace of the poet Frédéric Mistral, and Eyragues are quieter farming villages. Boulbon is a good base for walks in the Montagnette hills.

Gardianne, olive oil and the mistral
Arles cooks with what the Camargue gives it: red rice, fleur de sel and gardianne, a slow stew of bull meat in red wine. The Vallée des Baux produces olive oil under its own appellation, and the Saturday market on the boulevard des Lices is the place to stock the villa kitchen.
Spring and early autumn are the gentlest months. The Easter feria fills the town, and the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival runs through the summer from early July.
