Lisbon's grand avenues, with a bullring at their heart

Most visitors to Lisbon head straight downhill to the river. Campo Pequeno makes the case for staying up on the plateau. This is the Avenidas Novas, the planned quarter of wide, tree-lined boulevards that Lisbon laid out as it grew north in the late nineteenth century. In the middle stands the bullring, a red-brick building in the neo-Mudéjar style with onion domes on its four towers. It opened in 1892.

Our Campo Pequeno collection runs to 34 apartments in and around the neighbourhood, from Saldanha and Arroios to Alvalade and Areeiro. Most have two bedrooms and suit couples and small families, there are a few larger three and four-bedroom flats, and there is the odd townhouse apartment for anyone who wants a little more room.

Below you will find what the neighbourhood is like, what is within walking distance and when to come.

The Neighbourhood

Boulevards, pastelarias and a working city

Campo Pequeno is residential Lisbon at its most comfortable. The streets are flat, which is no small thing in a city of seven hills, and the pavements are wide. Lisboetas actually live and work here, so the cafés along Avenida da República fill up with office workers at lunch and with families at the weekend.

The bullring is the local landmark. Since a long restoration finished in 2006 it has hosted concerts and shows as well as bullfights, and there is a shopping centre, cinemas and restaurants underneath. Saldanha is just to the south, and Alvalade, a little to the north, is good for neighbourhood tascas and a slower pace.

The Gulbenkian, and other reasons to walk

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is around a quarter of an hour's walk away. Its museum covers four thousand years of art, from Egyptian antiquities and Islamic ceramics to Lalique jewellery, and it is one of the finest private collections in Europe. The modern art centre sits in the same grounds, and the garden, with its ponds and shaded paths, is a lovely place for an hour with a book.

For the old city you take the metro rather than climb. Chiado, the Baixa and the riverside in Santos are all a short ride away, and coming back to a quiet, level street in the evening is half the appeal of staying here.

Sintra, Belém and the beaches across the river

Being on the north side of the city makes day trips easy. Sintra, with its palaces in the hills and its UNESCO listing, is around forty minutes away by car. Belém, with the Jerónimos Monastery and the original pastéis de nata, is an easy run along the river.

Across the Tagus, the Setúbal Peninsula has the Arrábida hills, sandy coves and a good seafood lunch in Setúbal, all within about an hour. Our concierge can arrange drivers and guides for any of these.

Food & the Seasons

Custard tarts, sardines and a June street party

The neighbourhood does traditional pastelarias very well. The Versailles on Avenida da República is the grand old example, all mirrors, chandeliers and waiters in waistcoats, and it is the place for a galão and a pastel de nata. In June the whole city celebrates Santo António: grilled sardines and street parties in the old quarters, and the marchas populares parading down Avenida da Liberdade on the night of the 12th.

Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant months to walk the city. High summer is hot, and winter is mild but can be wet. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, fado evenings, guided walks and airport transfers.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Campo Pequeno a good area to stay in Lisbon?

Yes, especially if you want somewhere flat, quiet at night and well connected. It is close to the airport and the Gulbenkian, and the historic centre is a short metro ride away. If you would rather step straight out into the old city, Chiado or the Baixa will suit you better.

How far is Campo Pequeno from Lisbon airport?

It is one of the closest central neighbourhoods to the airport, at around 15 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. The metro also connects the two. Our concierge can arrange a private transfer.

Are there still bullfights at Campo Pequeno?

The arena still holds Portuguese-style bullfights in season, and the bull is not killed in the ring. For most of the year, though, it is used for concerts, shows and markets, and the shops and restaurants underneath are open all year.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in Campo Pequeno?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in Campo Pequeno cost?

Across our 34 properties in Campo Pequeno, weekly rates typically range from £2,300 to £2,700, with the most affordable from around £2,200 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

When is the best time to visit Lisbon?

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months for walking the city. June brings the Santo António festivities, while July and August are hot and busy.

Are there apartments in Campo Pequeno for large groups?

Yes. Our Campo Pequeno collection includes properties with up to 4 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
