Coffee with Pessoa, and the river at the end of the street

Chiado has been where Lisbon goes to be seen since the nineteenth century. Poets argued in its cafés, the opera house still fills on winter evenings, and Fernando Pessoa sits in bronze outside A Brasileira, where he used to drink his bica. In 1988 a fire destroyed much of the quarter. The architect Álvaro Siza led the rebuilding, keeping the old façades, and the result feels lived in rather than restored.

Our Chiado collection runs to 50+ apartments, from one-bedroom flats for a couple's long weekend to apartments with up to 4 bedrooms for families. They are spread around Carmo, São Roque, Santa Catarina and the slopes towards São Bento, and many look out across the rooftops to the river.

Below you will find what the neighbourhood is like, where its edges lie and when to come.

The Quarter

Bookshops, theatres and a long café habit

Rua Garrett is the spine of Chiado. A Brasileira is at the top, and further down is Bertrand, open since 1732 and recognised as the oldest bookshop in the world still trading. Around Largo do Camões you will find the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisbon's opera house, and the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, which is better than its modest entrance suggests.

Largo do Carmo is quieter. It is a leafy square beside the roofless Carmo Convent, which the earthquake of 1755 left open to the sky. Its nave is now an archaeological museum, and few places in the city show what Lisbon lost so plainly.

Hills & Miradouros

Funiculars, lifts and the view from Santa Catarina

Chiado sits on a hill, and the city has spent a century and a half finding ways to get you up it. The Santa Justa Lift climbs from the Baixa to Largo do Carmo. The yellow Elevador da Bica funicular rattles down a steep lane of washing lines to the riverside. Tram 28 grinds past Largo do Camões.

At the end of the afternoon, walk to the Miradouro de Santa Catarina and watch the light go over the Tagus and the 25 de Abril Bridge. Bairro Alto starts just across Rua da Misericórdia, which is handy for dinner and less so for an early night. Lower down, Santos has design shops and a gentler pace.

Beyond the City

Across the river to Arrábida

One of Chiado's quiet advantages is how easily you can leave it. Across the Tagus, the Setúbal Peninsula has the long Atlantic beaches of the Costa da Caparica and the limestone hills of the Arrábida Natural Park, where small coves sit below wooded cliffs. Setúbal is known for its fried cuttlefish and its moscatel wine.

Closer to home, Belém and its monastery are a short tram ride west, and Sintra makes an easy day out by train. Our concierge can arrange a driver so that nobody has to work out the parking.

Food & the Seasons

Warm custard tarts and sardines in June

Chiado's pastry counters take their pastéis de nata seriously, and they are best eaten warm, standing up, with cinnamon. At lunch, the old tascas serve bacalhau in more ways than seems reasonable. In the evenings the wine bars pour Douro reds and green wine from the Minho.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, mild and bright, with fewer crowds on the trams. In June, the Santo António festivities fill the old quarters with grilled sardines, paper garlands and music late into the night. High summer can be hot on the hills, and winter is the season for the opera and long lunches. Our concierge can book tables, fado evenings, guided walks and transfers.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chiado a good area to stay in Lisbon?

Yes. It is central, elegant and easy to walk, with the Baixa, Bairro Alto and the river all close by. Carmo and São Roque are a little quieter, while Santa Catarina and Bica tend to have the best river views.

When is the best time to visit Chiado?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, mild enough to walk the hills all day. June brings the Santo António festivities. July and August are hot and busy, and winter is quieter, with the opera season at São Carlos.

Is Chiado very hilly?

It is. The streets are steep and paved with polished limestone cobbles, which get slippery in the rain, so bring comfortable shoes. The Santa Justa Lift, the Bica funicular and the trams save a good deal of climbing.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in Chiado?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in Chiado cost?

Across our 50+ properties in Chiado, weekly rates typically range from £2,400 to £3,300, with the most affordable from around £2,100 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Chiado from Lisbon airport?

A taxi usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. The metro reaches Baixa-Chiado station with one change. Our concierge can arrange a private transfer to your apartment.

Are there apartments in Chiado for large groups?

Yes. Our Chiado collection includes properties with up to 4 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
