Villas, manor houses and chateaux from the Roman Gard to the hills of Gascony
As featured in
Occitanie is the large southern French region that runs from the Rhône to the Pyrenees, made in 2016 from the old Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. It holds a remarkable amount of history: the Pont du Gard and the arena at Nîmes, the walled Cité of Carcassonne, the red-brick cathedral city of Albi and the Canal du Midi, which still links Toulouse to the Mediterranean.
Our Occitanie collection runs to 210+ properties. They range from stone village houses and apartments in Uzès to vineyard domaines in the Hérault and Aude, and fully fledged chateaux in Gascony that are made for a family gathering or a wedding party.
This guide covers the main corners of the region, how to reach them and when to come.

Villa Blanche Montpellier France4 bedroomsThe Gard around Uzès for Roman sites and Provençal light, the Hérault for Montpellier, Sète and the vineyards, the Aude for Carcassonne and Cathar country, and the Gers and Lot for rolling farmland, bastides and slow lunches.

Uzès is the elegant heart of the Gard, a ducal town of pale stone whose arcaded Place aux Herbes fills with stalls every Saturday morning. The Pont du Gard, the three-tiered Roman aqueduct over the Gardon, is a short drive away, and Nîmes has one of the best-preserved Roman arenas anywhere, along with the Maison Carrée temple.
Hilltop Lussan looks out over the garrigue, and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon sits just across the Rhône from the Palais des Papes. In this part of the region, Provence is a neighbour, not a day trip.

Montpellier is young, handsome and lively, with the great open Place de la Comédie and medieval lanes behind it. Down on the coast, Sète is a working port of canals and fish restaurants, and every August its boatmen fight it out in the water jousts of the Fête de la Saint-Louis. Oysters come from the Étang de Thau around Bouzigues.
Inland, Pézenas keeps the memory of Molière, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert clings to its gorge, and the vineyards of Picpoul de Pinet and the Languedoc hills supply something good for every evening on the terrace.

The Cité of Carcassonne, with its double ring of walls and its many towers, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is at its best early in the morning or after the day visitors have gone. The Canal du Midi, also on UNESCO's list, runs below it under rows of plane trees, so a gentle afternoon by bicycle or boat is easy to arrange.
To the south, the ruined Cathar castles of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus perch on ridges above the Corbières vineyards. Castelnaudary, to the west, claims to be the home of cassoulet.

In the west, the Gers is quiet farming country of sunflowers, duck and Armagnac, with jazz arriving in Marciac every summer. The Lot has Rocamadour on its cliff and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie above the river, and in winter there are truffle markets. Aveyron gives you Roquefort and the Millau Viaduct.
Summer is the season for pools and the coast. May, June and September are warm and calmer, and good for walking and wine. Our concierge can arrange wine tastings, canal cruises, restaurant tables and transfers.
