Villas and old farmhouses among the vineyards and cypress ridges between Florence and Siena
As featured in
Chianti is the hill country between Florence and Siena. It is all ridges, oak woods, olive groves and vineyards, with stone hamlets and castles on the high ground and white gravel roads winding between them. The borders of the wine area go back to 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici marked them out. The black cockerel on every bottle of Chianti Classico is still the emblem of the old Chianti League.
Our Chianti collection runs to 170+ properties. They range from small villas outside Gaiole and Radda to restored fattorie and grand country houses near Greve and Montefioralle, some with room for large family parties, and almost all with a pool looking out over the vines.
What follows is a short guide to the villages, the wine and the best months to come.

Greve in Chianti is the market town of the region. Its sloping, arcaded piazza fills on Saturday mornings, and every September it hosts the Expo del Chianti Classico, a few days of tastings in the square. Montefioralle sits just above it: a ring of stone houses on a hilltop, small enough to walk round before lunch.
Panzano, a few kilometres south, looks over the Conca d'Oro, a natural bowl of vineyards. It is also home to Dario Cecchini's butcher's shop, as famous for its owner's theatre as for its bistecca. The Vallombrosan abbey of Badia a Passignano stands among vines nearby. Florence is close enough for an easy day trip.
Explore Florence
The southern Chianti, in the province of Siena, is higher and wilder. Radda is a small walled village with a fine view from its walls. Castellina in Chianti has a vaulted medieval walkway running beneath its walls, and an Etruscan burial mound on the edge of town.
Near Gaiole is Castello di Brolio, seat of the Ricasoli family. Baron Bettino Ricasoli, Italy's second prime minister, is credited with writing down the grape formula for Chianti wine in the nineteenth century. Gaiole also holds L'Eroica each October, when thousands of cyclists on vintage bicycles ride the white roads in woollen jerseys. Siena is around half an hour away.
Explore Siena

Chianti Classico is made mainly from Sangiovese, and it is the wine of the historic heartland between Florence and Siena. It should not be confused with the wider Chianti appellation, which covers a much larger part of Tuscany. Many estates offer cellar tours and tastings, from family farms with a handful of hectares to old castles with centuries of vintages in their cellars.
The pleasure lies in mixing the two: a morning at a great name, then a long lunch at a small producer who also presses olive oil and cures his own finocchiona. Our concierge can plan a day of visits with a driver, so nobody has to choose between the tasting and the car keys.
Explore Tuscany
Chianti cooking is country food, and none the worse for it. Expect ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, pecorino, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, and bistecca alla fiorentina grilled over wood.
May, June and September are the loveliest months: warm, green or golden, and quieter than high summer, when the afternoons can be very hot. The grape harvest runs through September into October. In November the olives are pressed, and the new oil, green and peppery on toasted bread, is reason enough for an autumn visit. Our concierge can arrange cookery classes, a private chef, winery visits and restaurant tables.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Greve, Panzano and Montefioralle in the north suit those who want restaurants nearby and easy trips to Florence. Radda, Gaiole and Castellina in the south feel more rural and put Siena within reach.
May, June and September are ideal, with warm days and fewer visitors. The grape harvest falls in September and October, and November brings the new olive oil. July and August are hot but lively.
Chianti Classico comes from the historic Chianti region between Florence and Siena and carries the black cockerel on its bottles. Plain Chianti is a separate, larger appellation covering a much wider area of Tuscany.
