Villas among the pines and rice fields, a few minutes from the long white beaches of the Alentejo coast
As featured in
Comporta is a small village of whitewashed, blue-trimmed houses on the Alentejo coast, south of the Tróia peninsula. Around it lie rice paddies, umbrella pines and cork oaks. White storks nest on the chimneys, and a wide, pale beach runs south for mile after mile. For years Lisbon families kept it to themselves. Word has got out since, but the place has kept its low-rise, barefoot manners.
Our Comporta collection runs to 110+ properties. There are contemporary villas among the pines near Carvalhal and Pego, houses with sea views above the estuary at Carrasqueira, and larger family quintas. Almost all have private pools, and some have heated pools and spas.
Below you will find where to stay, how to get here and what to do once you have arrived.

Comporta itself takes about ten minutes to walk around. It has a handful of good restaurants, a few interiors shops and the road down to its beach, where a wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes. Most of the area's villas sit a little south, in the pines around Carvalhal and Pego, two of the finest stretches of sand on this coast.
Life here is unhurried. You spend the morning on the beach and stay over a long lunch of grilled fish at a shack in the dunes. In the evening a glass of local white comes out on the terrace while the light goes gold over the rice fields.

On the other side of the peninsula lies the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, a world of salt marsh, mudflats and reed beds. At Carrasqueira, fishermen still tie up at a harbour of rickety wooden jetties built on stilts over the mud. It is best seen at low tide, early or late in the day.
The estuary is home to a resident group of bottlenose dolphins, which are often seen from boats out of Setúbal. Flamingos feed in the shallows for much of the year. Inland, the old town of Alcácer do Sal climbs the bank of the Sado beneath its castle.

The Tróia peninsula stretches north towards Setúbal, with more beach on its ocean side. On its estuary shore are the remains of a large Roman fish-salting works, where fish sauce was once made for export. Tróia also has a golf course, and there is good riding along the sands and through the pine forest.
The car ferry from Setúbal to Tróia takes around 25 minutes. It is the more scenic way to arrive, and dolphins sometimes follow the boat. It also makes day trips easy to Setúbal's fish market and to the Arrábida hills across the water.

The paddies are not just for show. Rice is the local staple, and arroz de marisco, a soupy rice with shellfish, appears on almost every menu. So do clams, grilled fish and, closer to Setúbal, choco frito, fried cuttlefish. Wines from the Herdade da Comporta estate are worth seeking out.
The beach season runs from June to September. The Atlantic stays bracing even in August, which is where a heated pool earns its keep. Spring and autumn are quieter, mild and very good for walking and birdwatching. Our concierge can book beach restaurant tables, riding, dolphin trips and transfers from Lisbon.
