Villas with private pools on the Lycian coast, from the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz to the harbours of Kalkan and Kaş
As featured in
Few people come to Dalaman for Dalaman itself. It is a modest farming town on a river delta, and its real value is the airport, around four hours' flight from the UK. That airport opens up one of the loveliest stretches of the Turkish Mediterranean. Within an hour you can be swimming at Ölüdeniz or eating grilled fish in Fethiye. Within two you can be on a roof terrace in Kalkan, watching the sun go down behind the Greek islands.
Our Dalaman collection runs to 80+ villas spread along that coast. You will find family villas in the pine-covered hills of Ovacık above Ölüdeniz, hillside houses looking over Fethiye and Kalkan, and quieter retreats near Kaş. Almost all have private pools.
Here is how the coast divides up, when to come and how to get there.

Villa Adalet | 6-Bedroom Villa with Private Pool in Mugla Oludeniz6 bedroomsÖlüdeniz and Ovacık for the Blue Lagoon and family holidays, Fethiye for markets and boat trips, Kalkan for roof terrace dining and Patara beach, and Kaş for diving, Kekova and a Greek island on the horizon.

Ölüdeniz is the postcard: a shallow, sheltered lagoon of pale turquoise water, protected as a nature reserve, with Babadağ mountain rising straight up behind it. Tandem paragliders launch from close to 2,000 metres and spiral down to land on the beach, which makes for good entertainment even if you stay on your sun lounger.
Ovacık and Hisarönü sit in the hills above, a short drive from the sea, and many of our villas are here. Nearby is Kayaköy, a Greek village left empty after the population exchange of 1923, its hillside of roofless stone houses worth an early morning walk. Boats from Ölüdeniz run round to Butterfly Valley, and Fethiye's Tuesday market is the place to buy spices, dried apricots and Turkish towels.

Kalkan was a Greek fishing village, and its old quarter of whitewashed houses and bougainvillea still tumbles down to a small harbour. It is the most polished town on this coast, with no high-rise hotels, and evenings revolve around dinner on roof terraces above the bay.
Hillside villas here tend to look straight out to sea. Patara, a short drive west, is one of the longest sandy beaches in Turkey, with the ruins of an ancient Lycian city behind the dunes. Xanthos and Letoon, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are close by, as is the Saklıkent gorge, where you can wade up an icy river between sheer walls of rock.

Kaş is the most bohemian of the coastal towns, a lively little harbour with an ancient theatre on its edge and a Lycian sarcophagus standing in the middle of a shopping street. The water here is famously clear, and it is one of the best places in Turkey to dive or snorkel.
Boat trips run to Kekova, where you can look down on the walls of a city partly sunk by earthquakes, and to the castle village of Simena, reachable only by water. The Greek island of Kastellorizo lies just offshore, a short ferry crossing away, so lunch in another country is quite possible.

At Fethiye's fish market you choose your fish from the slab, and one of the restaurants around the square cooks it for you, with meze, salads and cold Efes alongside. Elsewhere look out for gözleme, thin flatbreads folded around spinach and cheese, cooked on a griddle by village women.
The swimming season runs from May to October. July and August are very hot, so a villa with a pool and shade earns its keep. Spring brings wild flowers and is the best time to walk the Lycian Way, and October is warm, golden and quieter. Our concierge can arrange gulet days around Göcek's islands, paragliding, guided walks and transfers.

It is a long-distance footpath of more than 500 kilometres that starts near Ölüdeniz and follows the coast east towards Antalya, passing ruined Lycian cities, beaches and mountain villages. Most visitors walk a section for a day rather than the whole route, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to go.
