Sugar cane, sea holes and a village made of stone
La Romana started out as a sugar town, and the cane fields still run inland for miles. In the early 1970s the company that ran the great sugar mill here built an executive retreat on the coast. That retreat grew into Casa de Campo, a resort and residential estate of around 7,000 acres, which is the main reason most visitors come to this corner of the Caribbean today.

Casa de Campo for golf, the marina and Minitas Beach, Bayahibe for boats to Saona and Catalina, and Punta Cana and the La Altagracia coast an hour to the east.
An estate with its own airport, marina and beach
Casa de Campo works more like a small town than a hotel. There are polo fields and an equestrian centre, a marina lined with restaurants and boutiques, and Minitas Beach, a sheltered crescent of sand inside a reef. Most people get around by golf cart, and a dinner reservation is often just a short drive away.
La Romana's own international airport sits just beyond the estate, so private jets and charter flights can land around ten minutes from your door. Few Caribbean destinations are quicker to reach from the runway.

Seven holes along the Caribbean
Pete Dye designed all three courses at Casa de Campo, which add up to 63 holes. The best known is Teeth of the Dog, which opened in 1971 on a coral shoreline. Seven of its holes run directly along the sea, and Dye said it was his favourite design. It is often ranked the best course in the Caribbean, and it has recently been regrassed.
Dye Fore runs along the cliffs above the Chavón River gorge, and The Links, inland, is gentler and less windy. Keen golfers can play a different course every day for a week and not get bored.

A sixteenth-century village built in the 1970s
Altos de Chavón sits high above the Chavón River and looks like a sixteenth-century Mediterranean village, with cobbled lanes, a stone church and artists' workshops. In fact it was built in the 1970s. Its amphitheatre, opened by Frank Sinatra in 1982, still hosts concerts, and the sunset over the gorge is worth the trip on its own.
Out at sea, Catalina Island lies just off La Romana and is good for snorkelling and diving. Boats from the fishing village of Bayahibe run to Saona Island, inside a national park, where palms lean over pale sand and starfish rest in the shallows.

Sancocho, rum and a long dry winter
Dominican cooking is hearty. Try la bandera, the national lunch of rice, beans and stewed meat, then sancocho, a slow-cooked meat and root vegetable stew, and mangú, mashed green plantain, at breakfast. On the coast, the fish was usually caught that morning, and the evening ends with aged Dominican rum and merengue somewhere nearby.
December to April is dry, sunny and the busiest time, so Christmas and Easter villas go early. Summer is hotter and more humid, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
