Villas and sea-view apartments on the island of Hippocrates, from the sandy north coast to the hills around Zia
As featured in
Kos lies in the Dodecanese, so close to the Turkish coast that the hills around Bodrum fill the view from its harbour. It is around 40 kilometres long, with long sandy beaches on the north coast and a mountain ridge rising behind them. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was born here, and the sanctuary built in his name still stands on its terraces above the plain.
Our Kos collection runs to 100+ properties: villas with private pools set among olive groves, family houses a short walk from the sand at Tigaki and Marmari, and apartments with sea views towards Kalymnos. Most look out to sea, and many are within easy reach of a taverna.
What follows covers the island's corners, its food and the months worth coming.
Villa numbers and guide prices are updated daily from our live collection.

Villa Aero Greece5 bedroomsKos Town and Psalidi for history and restaurants, Tigaki and Marmari for sandy, shallow beaches, Mastichari for a working harbour and boats to Kalymnos, and Kefalos for the quieter south-west.

Kos Town is the island's real centre, and a pleasant place to wander. The Castle of the Knights of St John guards the harbour, and close by stands the old plane tree under which, so the story goes, Hippocrates taught his pupils. The ancient Agora runs through the middle of town, and the Casa Romana preserves the mosaics of a wealthy Roman household.
The Asklepieion lies about four kilometres south-west, on three terraces looking across the strait to Turkey. Go early, before the heat and the coaches. East of town, Psalidi and Lambi have beaches and level cycle paths, and ferries leave the harbour for Bodrum.

The north coast is where most families head, and for good reason. Tigaki and Marmari have long beaches of pale sand with shallow water, and the land behind them is flat enough to cycle everywhere. Between the two lies the Alykes salt lake, a quiet place for a walk at the end of the day.
In July and August the meltemi blows from the north, which keeps the afternoons bearable and brings out the windsurfers and kitesurfers at Marmari. Mastichari, further west, is a small harbour village with fish tavernas. Ferries cross from there to Kalymnos in around 30 to 45 minutes, so an island lunch makes an easy day out.
Explore the Southern Aegean

Mount Dikeos rises to 846 metres along the island's eastern ridge, and on its slope sits Zia, a village of stone houses and terraced tavernas. Everyone drives up for the sunset over Kalymnos, so book a table, and take a jumper, because the evening is noticeably cooler up there. Keen walkers can climb from the village square to the summit.
Further west, the ruins of Paleo Pyli and the Venetian walls of Antimachia castle are worth an afternoon. Kefalos and Kamari Bay in the far south-west feel quieter. Boats sail from Kardamena and Kos Town to Nisyros, where you can walk down into the crater of its volcano.
Explore Rhodes
Kos cooks simply and well. Try krasotyri, the local cheese aged in red wine, along with island honey, fish grilled at the harbour in Mastichari and tomatoes that actually taste of something. They say cos lettuce takes its name from the island, so order a salad without irony.
The season runs from May to October. June and September bring warm sea and fewer people, July and August are hot and busy, and spring is good for walking and wild flowers. Our concierge can arrange bicycle and car hire, a private chef, boat trips to Kalymnos and Nisyros, and a table at sunset in Zia.
