Villas and apartments with pools on the largest of the Cyclades, from the sands below Chora to the marble villages of the mountains
As featured in
Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, and the most fertile. Its valleys grow potatoes that are sold under the island's name all over Greece, its hillsides produce graviera cheese, and Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades at just over 1,000 metres, keeps the interior greener than you expect well into summer. Legend says Theseus left Ariadne on its shore, and Dionysus came along to console her. The island has been generous to visitors ever since.
Our Naxos collection runs to 120+ villas and apartments, from sea-view houses above Agios Georgios and Agios Prokopios, a short drive from Chora, to villas near the long west coast beaches at Plaka and Mikri Vigla, and quieter retreats inland at Sangri, Apiranthos and Koronos or on the east coast at Moutsouna. Most have pools, and some have hot tubs.
Here is where to stay, what to see and when to come.

Ferries dock below the Portara, the great marble doorway of a temple to Apollo begun around 530 BC and never finished. It stands on a small islet joined to the harbour by a causeway, and at sunset half the island seems to walk out to it. Above the port sits the Kastro, the Venetian quarter built after Marco Sanudo took Naxos in 1207 and made it the seat of the Duchy of the Archipelago.
Agios Georgios, the town beach, is shallow and sheltered, and you can walk to it from Chora. South of it the sand barely stops: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and then Plaka, one of the longest beaches in the Cyclades, followed by Mikri Vigla, where kitesurfers come for the summer wind.

Inland, the Tragea valley is a quiet sea of olive trees with little Byzantine churches dotted through it. Halki, its main village, is home to the Vallindras distillery, which has made kitron, a liqueur from the leaves of the citron tree, for generations. Nearby, the Panagia Drosiani holds some of the earliest Christian frescoes on the island.
Further on, Apiranthos is a village of marble lanes and stone houses, and Koronos clings to a ravine in the north. Ancient sculptors left two unfinished kouroi lying near Melanes, and another, around ten metres long, in the quarry at Apollonas. Walkers can climb Mount Zas from Filoti in a morning, past the cave where Zeus is said to have grown up.

The east coast is wilder and much emptier. Moutsouna, once the port for the island's emery mines, is now a small fishing harbour with tavernas and coves along the coast road south. It is the side of Naxos to choose if you want silence more than sunloungers.
Naxos is also a good base for exploring. Paros is under an hour away by ferry, and boats run to the Small Cyclades, including Koufonisia, for days of swimming in very clear water. Our concierge can arrange a private boat for the day.

Naxos eats well from its own land. Look for graviera and the sharper arseniko cheese, local potatoes fried in olive oil, slow-cooked goat and pork from the hill villages, and kitron to finish. Tavernas in Chora and on the beach at Plaka put the island's fish on the grill.
The season runs from May to October. July and August are hot and busy, and the meltemi wind blows hard on the west coast, which the kitesurfers love more than the sunbathers do. June and September offer warm sea and calmer days, and spring is the best time to walk. Our concierge can arrange boat trips, restaurant tables, guides, car hire and transfers.
