The valley where Méribel began

Most people say Méribel when they mean Les Allues. The commune covers the whole valley, from the old village at around 1,100 metres up through Méribel Village and Méribel Centre to Mottaret at around 1,750 metres. It was the village of Les Allues, with its communal bread oven, old barns and narrow lanes, that caught the eye of a Scotsman, Peter Lindsay, in 1938 when he went looking for somewhere new to ski.

Our collection in the valley runs to 110+ properties, most of them apartments, from compact ski-in bases in Mottaret to roomy flats near the centre. There are also wooden chalets for families and friends, the largest with 8 bedrooms.

Here is how the valley fits together, how it skis and when to come.

Where to stay in Les Allues

Méribel Centre for restaurants and après-ski, Mottaret for altitude and the quickest access to the slopes, and the old village of Les Allues for quiet, tradition and a gondola straight up to the action.

The Valley

One commune, several moods

Climb the valley and the character changes with the altitude. At the bottom, Les Allues and the neighbouring hamlets of Le Raffort and Cruet are working Savoyard villages with a bakery, a couple of bars and a few long-established restaurants. Prices tend to be gentler down here, and so are the evenings.

Méribel Centre, at around 1,450 metres, is the social heart, built in wood and stone under a strict building code that has kept the town pleasing to look at. Higher still, Mottaret puts you on the snow, and it is where the season often lasts longest.

The Skiing

The middle of the largest linked ski area

The Allues valley sits at the centre of the Three Valleys, with Courchevel over one ridge and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Les Menuires and Val Thorens over the other. From Mottaret you can be on the lifts towards Mont Vallon and the Saulire within minutes.

From Les Allues, the Olympe gondola, built for the 1992 Albertville Games and renovated in 2021, climbs to the Chaudanne in Méribel. A gentle blue run brings you back to the village, though at its lower altitude it usually shuts before the end of the season. Méribel's Olympic history goes on: it shared the 2023 Alpine World Championships with Courchevel.

Food & When to Go

Beaufort, bread ovens and a long winter

The ski season usually runs from early December to late April. January offers the quietest slopes, and March brings long days and plenty of sun. Food in the valley is Savoyard and generous: tartiflette made with reblochon, fondue made with local Beaufort, and crozets, the small square pasta of the region.

In summer the valley changes completely. There is a golf course near the altiport, walking around the Lac de Tueda nature reserve above Mottaret, and lifts that stay open for mountain bikers. Our concierge can book transfers, tables and mountain guides, and can help you choose the right part of the valley.
