Courchevel 1850 has the grandest chalets in the Alps, Méribel is the central base, and Val Thorens, at around 2,300 metres, is the highest resort in Europe.

At the head of the Tarentaise valley, Val d'Isère and Tignes share the Espace Killy, one of the highest and most snow-sure ski areas in the Alps, with glacier skiing and a season that often runs from late November into May. Val d'Isère is a real village with superb restaurants; Tignes puts the lifts at the door.

Paradiski links Les Arcs and La Plagne by the Vanoise Express cable car, and Les Arcs can be reached by funicular from the station at Bourg-Saint-Maurice. To the south, the Maurienne valley has quieter, good-value resorts such as Valloire and Val Cenis.
