Mijas is really two places. Mijas Pueblo is a whitewashed village on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, looking down over the Mediterranean, with a bullring from 1900 and a chapel cut into the rock. Below it, Mijas Costa runs for around twelve kilometres along the shore, through La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol, Miraflores and Calahonda.

Whitewash, geraniums and a long view
The old village sits high on the mountainside, and its lanes of white houses and flowerpots lead to a lookout over the coast towards Fuengirola. The bullring was built in 1900 and opened on 8 September, the feast day of the village's patron. The little sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña, dating from the seventeenth century, is set into the rock nearby.
Come early in the morning or towards evening, when the coach parties have gone and the village belongs to its residents again. Villas in the hills around here are the ones to choose for cool evenings, quiet and a terrace with a view.

La Cala, Calahonda and a path by the sea
La Cala de Mijas began as a fishing village and still has its old watchtower, the Torreón de la Cala, beside a Blue Flag beach. A coastal footpath runs along the shore here, which is good for an early walk or a bicycle ride before the heat sets in.
Calahonda, Miraflores and Riviera del Sol, further east, are mostly residential, with beach bars and restaurants along the sand. Las Lagunas, inland from Fuengirola, is the busy, practical heart of the municipality, with shops and good access to the coast road.

Mijas has more golf than almost anywhere on the coast. La Cala Resort, Mijas Golf, Miraflores, La Noria and Santana are all within the municipality, so most villas are a short drive from a first tee.
Behind the village, the Sierra de Mijas has marked paths through pine woods and limestone, with views that reach Africa on a clear winter day. Málaga, with its Picasso Museum and cathedral, is under an hour away, and the hill village of Casares makes a good lunch drive to the west.

Gazpachuelo, fried fish and a September feria
Eat the way Málaga province eats: fried fish and espetos of sardines on the beach, and gazpachuelo, a warm local soup of fish, potato and mayonnaise. The village holds its feria in the first half of September in honour of the Virgen de la Peña, with a procession on 8 September. La Cala has its own fiesta at the end of July.
