Villas and apartments from Picasso's home city to Marbella, Estepona and the white villages above Nerja
As featured in
For years Málaga was the airport you landed at on the way to somewhere else. It isn't any more. The city now has the Museo Picasso, a Centre Pompidou in a coloured glass cube by the port, a Moorish fortress above a Roman theatre, and some of the best tapas bars in Spain. On either side of it, the province runs west to Marbella and Estepona and east to Nerja, with the sierras rising behind.
Our Málaga collection runs to 760+ properties. You'll find sea-view apartments in La Malagueta and Soho, contemporary villas with infinity pools in Nueva Andalucía and Benahavís, family houses near Estepona and San Pedro, and hillside villas above Nerja. The largest have 17 bedrooms.
Below you'll find where to stay along the coast and inland, when to come, and what is worth the drive.

Picasso was born on the Plaza de la Merced in 1881, and the museum that bears his name sits in a Renaissance palace a few streets away. Above the old town, the Moorish Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle look out over the port, with a Roman theatre at their feet.
La Malagueta, the city beach, is a short walk from the centre, and its apartments put you close to the sand and the restaurants. Soho, by the river, is the arts quarter, its walls covered in large murals. In August the Feria fills the streets for a week, and Holy Week is solemn and very grand.

Marbella's old town centres on the Plaza de los Naranjos, a whitewashed square shaded by orange trees. The Golden Mile runs west towards Puerto Banús, and Nueva Andalucía climbs behind it into what locals call the Golf Valley. In the hills above, the village of Benahavís has more restaurants than seems reasonable for its size.
Further west, San Pedro and Estepona are calmer and more family-minded. Estepona's old town is known for its flower-filled streets and long seafront promenade. The hill village of Casares sits up behind, with Gibraltar on the horizon.

East of the city the coast gets steeper and greener. Nerja's Balcón de Europa is a palm-lined promontory over the sea. The Cuevas de Nerja, discovered in 1959, hold vast chambers and prehistoric paintings. Just beyond, the coves around Maro are the clearest water on this stretch.
Inland lies the Axarquía, a hill country of avocado groves, vineyards growing Moscatel grapes and white villages. Frigiliana is the best known, a steep maze of whitewashed lanes. The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama rise behind it, with good walking from spring to autumn.

The dish of the Málaga coast is the espeto: sardines threaded on a cane skewer and grilled over driftwood in an old boat full of sand on the beach. Cold ajoblanco, a soup of almonds and garlic, is a local summer staple, and Málaga's sweet wines go well with whatever comes after.
The beach season runs from May to October. Spring and autumn suit golf, walking and the city, and the winters are mild enough for long stays. Our concierge can arrange tee times, a private chef, boat trips, restaurant tables and transfers.
