Montpellier is the young one among the great cities of the French south. It has had a medical school since the Middle Ages, one of the oldest still teaching anywhere, and it keeps a student's appetite for terraces, late dinners and summer festivals. The old quarter, the Écusson, is a tangle of limestone lanes and private mansions. The Mediterranean is a short drive south.

Montpellier itself for culture and restaurants, Pézenas and the villages around Caux for vineyards and village life, and the Gard for the Pont du Gard and the Rhône.
Limestone lanes and a grand promenade
Most first evenings start on the Place de la Comédie, a broad oval square with an opera house at one end. From there the Écusson rises in narrow streets of bookshops, wine bars and hidden courtyards. At the top, the Promenade du Peyrou has a royal statue, a water tower and a long view towards the hills.
The Musée Fabre is one of the best fine art museums in provincial France. Antigone, Ricardo Bofill's neoclassical quarter, is worth a walk if only to argue about it over lunch. Apartments in the centre put all of this on foot, and the mas on the city's edge give you more space and a pool, with town a short drive away.

Molière's town and the wine villages
West of the city the Hérault opens into vineyards, olive groves and stone villages. Pézenas is the pick of them. Molière and his troupe spent time here in the 1650s, and the old town is a run of hôtels particuliers, antique shops and artisans' workshops. Do try the petits pâtés, small sweet and savoury pies said to have come over with Clive of India's cooks.
Around Caux, Montagnac and Saint-Thibéry the properties are mostly wine estates and old mas, with châteaux for larger parties. Picpoul de Pinet, the crisp white of the area, is made a few miles south, by the lagoon.

Abbeys, gorges and a Roman aqueduct
Northwest of Montpellier, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert sits in a steep valley above the Hérault. Its abbey of Gellone is a UNESCO-listed stop on the pilgrim routes to Santiago, and the medieval Pont du Diable crosses the river just below. The Pic Saint-Loup, the city's own mountain, is a fine half-day climb, with vineyards around its base.
To the east the Gard has the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct and UNESCO site, around an hour by road. Beaucaire faces Tarascon across the Rhône. Further north, the Gorges du Tarn and the Millau Viaduct are within reach of our houses near Mostuéjouls.

Oysters, tielles and a long warm autumn
The Étang de Thau supplies the oysters and mussels of Bouzigues, best eaten by the water with a cold glass of Picpoul. In Sète, the port on the far side, you will find tielle, a spiced octopus pie, and the water-jousting contests of the Fête de la Saint-Louis in late August.
Montpellier Danse fills the city in June and July. High summer is hot and busy on the coast at Palavas and La Grande-Motte. May, June and September are gentler, and September brings the grape harvest. Our concierge can arrange wine estate visits, restaurant tables, private chefs and transfers.
