A pirate town at the mouth of a canyon
Few places on the Dalmatian coast make an entrance like Omiš. The emerald Cetina river cuts through a limestone gorge and opens out into the sea right beside the old town, with the cliffs rising almost straight up behind the rooftops. In the Middle Ages this was a base for the Omiš pirates, who raided Adriatic shipping from the river mouth, and their lookouts still keep watch from the rock above.

Omiš itself for the old town and the canyon, Duće and Dugi Rat for long beaches towards Split, and Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica and Mimice for quieter coves on the road to Makarska.
Stone lanes under the cliffs
The old town is small and easy to walk, with a main street of stone houses running inland from the river mouth and a handful of baroque churches tucked in beside it. Above it stands Mirabela, a round pirate tower reached by a steep staircase of around fifteen minutes, with a fine view over the beaches and the river.
Fitter walkers can carry on up the marked path to the Starigrad fortress, known locally as Fortica, high on the canyon wall. It takes the better part of an hour from town and is best attempted early in the morning, before the rock warms up.

Rafting, canyoning and a zip line
A road tunnel from the old town leads straight into the Cetina canyon, and the river is the reason many families come back. Rafting trips run through the summer and into October, canyoning combines scrambling, swimming and the odd jump into pools, and a long zip line swings across the gorge.
For something gentler, take a boat or kayak upstream between the cliffs, where the water stays cool even in August. In high summer the canyon offers welcome shade, and rafting trips are worth booking a few days ahead.

Duće, Stanići and the road to Makarska
Omiš has a sandy town beach, which is unusual on a coast of pebbles, and the villages either side have their own character. To the west, Duće and Dugi Rat have long, shallow beaches that suit young children, and Split is within easy reach for a day of Diocletian's Palace.
To the east, the coast road climbs above Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica and Mimice, with smaller coves below and the island of Brač lying across the channel. The villas here tend to sit higher on the hillside, so the views are wider but the beach may be a short drive away.

Soparnik, klapa and a long, warm summer
The local dish to try is Poljički soparnik, a thin pie of Swiss chard, onion, garlic and olive oil from the old Republic of Poljica just inland, now protected under EU geographical status. In July the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa fills the squares with unaccompanied harmony singing, a tradition on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
