Trulli, masserie and villas with pools in the olive groves below Puglia's White City, a short drive from the Adriatic

The White City and the olive groves below it

Seen from the coast road at dusk, Ostuni looks like a heap of sugar cubes tipped onto a hill. The old town is a tangle of whitewashed steps, arches and alleys climbing to a late Gothic cathedral. Below it the land drops through centuries-old olive groves to the Adriatic, around eight kilometres away. It is the handsomest town in this corner of Puglia, and a sensible base for exploring the rest of it.

Our Ostuni collection runs to 140+ properties, almost all of them out in the countryside. You can choose from restored trulli with conical stone roofs, masserie that began life as fortified farmhouses, contemporary villas with infinity pools and sea views, and roomy apartments, several with private pools. There is also a handful of larger houses for family gatherings.

Below is a guide to the town, the coast, the valley behind it and when to come.

Where to stay in Ostuni

For trulli and masserie, stay in the olive-grove countryside around Ostuni. For beaches, stay on the coast at Pilone and Rosa Marina. Martina Franca and the Valle d'Itria are the trulli towns, and Savelletri, Monopoli and Polignano a Mare lie along the coast to the north.

The Old Town

Whitewash, steep lanes and a great rose window

Ostuni's old town winds up to its cathedral. It was built in the second half of the fifteenth century in a late Gothic style that is rare in Puglia, and its curved limestone façade has one of the largest rose windows in Italy. The houses around it have been limewashed for centuries, which is how Ostuni came to be called La Città Bianca.

Down in Piazza della Libertà, a tall Baroque column carries a statue of Sant'Oronzo, the town's patron saint. Near the cathedral is the Museum of Preclassical Civilisations of the Southern Murgia. It holds Delia, a pregnant young woman who was buried in a cave just outside town around 25,000 years ago and found in 1991. The museum is small, and surprisingly moving.

Countryside & Coast

Olive groves running down to the sea

Most of our properties are in the contrade, the old farming districts spread across the plain and hills around Ostuni. The olive trees here are huge and gnarled, many of them centuries old, and dry-stone walls divide the fields between trulli and masserie. The hills give you cooler evenings and views across the plain to the sea. The lower ground gives you a shorter drive to the beach.

The coast is close. To the north, the Dune Costiere regional park runs from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo, with dunes, wetlands and long sandy beaches. Nearer town, the Costa Merlata is a run of rocky coves with clear water. Further south, the Torre Guaceto reserve near Carovigno is excellent for snorkelling.

The Valle d'Itria

Trulli country, a short drive inland

Behind Ostuni rise the low hills of the Valle d'Itria, the heart of trulli country. Cisternino is the place for supper. Its butchers run fornelli pronti: you choose your meat at the counter and they grill it for you. Martina Franca has a Baroque old centre and an opera festival each summer. Locorotondo is a circular old town of white houses above the vineyards. Alberobello has the best-known trulli of all, and they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Up the coast, Savelletri has grand masserie and the ruins of ancient Egnazia. Monopoli and Polignano a Mare make an easy day out.

Food & the Seasons

Orecchiette, burrata and a long, warm autumn

The cooking here comes from the land around it. Expect orecchiette with turnip tops, burrata and fresh ricotta, capocollo from Martina Franca, grilled fish on the coast, and olive oil pressed from groves like the ones you will be staying among.

May, June and September are the best months: warm enough to swim, without the summer crowds. July and August are hot and busy, with Ferragosto on 15 August. The Sant'Oronzo festival runs from 25 to 27 August, when riders in red escort the saint through the town. Our concierge can arrange a private chef, cookery lessons, wine tastings, boat trips and transfers.

Why book your Ostuni villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Ostuni's properties are scattered across a wide countryside of unmarked lanes, and we know which are minutes from the beach, which sit high enough for a breeze and a sea view, and which are closest to the old town for dinner. With 140+ properties in Ostuni, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Private chefs, cookery lessons, wine and olive oil tastings, boat trips along the coast, car hire and transfers from Brindisi or Bari. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Ostuni celebrates its patron saint from 25 to 27 August. On 26 August, the main day, riders in red tunics escort the saint's silver statue through the town, and the night ends with fireworks. The festival goes back to the seventeenth century, when the town was spared the plague.
