Phang Nga is the province you see from Phuket without quite noticing. Look east across the water from Phuket and the bay is full of sheer limestone towers rising out of green water. Look north over the Sarasin Bridge and the coast stretches away in long, empty beaches towards Khao Lak. It has the same sea, the same airport and much the same food as its famous neighbour, with a fraction of the crowds.

Rice paddies in the middle of the bay
Ko Yao Noi and its larger neighbour Ko Yao Yai lie roughly halfway between Phuket and Krabi. Speedboats from Bang Rong pier on Phuket's east coast reach them in around half an hour. Life here is slow and rural, with water buffalo in the paddies, rubber plantations, fishing boats and a mostly Muslim community, so modest dress in the villages goes down well.
Ko Yao Noi has most of the restaurants and small cafés. Ko Yao Yai, around Phru Nai, is emptier still. The view from either is the reason to come: dawn over the karsts, with longtails puttering out to the islands.

A long beach just over the bridge
Cross the Sarasin Bridge from northern Phuket and you are in Phang Nga almost at once. The coast around Khok Kloi, in Takua Thung district, is a long run of sand at Natai Beach, with casuarina trees and very few people on it. Villas here combine real seclusion with an easy drive from Phuket airport, which makes them a sensible choice for short stays and families with young children.
Inland lies Phang Nga Bay itself. Sea canoes slip into hidden lagoons inside the limestone islands, and Ko Panyi is a fishing village built on stilts. Khao Phing Kan is better known as James Bond Island, after The Man with the Golden Gun.

Jungle, beaches and the road to the Similans
Khao Lak, spread across Khuekkhak and Lam Kaen, is the departure point for the Similan Islands. This marine national park is famous for its diving and snorkelling. Speedboats from Thap Lamu make the crossing in a little over an hour, and the park opens from mid-October to mid-May.
Back on land, the Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park runs down to the sea. At Bang Niang, a police boat carried far inland by the 2004 tsunami stands as a quiet memorial. Further north, Takua Pa's old town keeps its Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the tin-mining days.

Sour curries and a dry-season sea
Southern Thai cooking is hotter and sharper than the Bangkok version. Look for gaeng som, a sour turmeric curry usually made with fish, plus crab and squid grilled on the beach, and roti from Muslim street stalls on the Yao islands.
The northeast monsoon brings the best weather from November to April, with calm seas and clear water. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher water, the Similans close, and prices and crowds fall away.
