Villas and fincas between a stone market town, a sheltered bay and the cliffs of Formentor
As featured in
Pollensa, or Pollença as the Mallorcans write it, is really two places with a peninsula attached. The old town was built inland in the Middle Ages, well back from the sea and the pirates, and it still has honey-coloured stone houses, a Sunday market on the Plaça Major and 365 cypress-lined steps up to the Calvari chapel. A short drive away, Port de Pollença curves around one of the most sheltered bays on the island, and beyond it the Formentor peninsula runs out to sea in a long ridge of cliffs.
Our Pollensa collection runs to 600+ properties: stone fincas among olive and almond groves, modern villas looking over the bay, apartments with pools close to the port, and family houses on the flat land towards Alcúdia. The largest have 10 bedrooms.
Here is how the area divides up, and when to come.

Pollensa's old town is built for slow mornings. Life centres on the Plaça Major and the large church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels, and on Sundays the square fills with stalls selling cheese, olives and pottery. The climb up the Calvari steps is easier than it looks, with views over the rooftops to the bay from the chapel at the top.
Each year on 2 August the town re-enacts its fight against a pirate raid in 1550, with locals dressed as Moors and Christians battling through the streets. It is loud, good-humoured and taken very seriously. The countryside around town, with its fincas and drystone walls, makes a quiet base within a few minutes of dinner.

Port de Pollença has long been a favourite with British families, and the reason is the water: the bay is calm and shallow, and the Pine Walk along the seafront makes for an easy evening stroll. Agatha Christie stayed here and set a short story, Problem at Pollensa Bay, in the port.
The road out to Cap de Formentor passes the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint and the pine-backed beach at Formentor before ending at a lighthouse at the island's northern tip. In recent summers, private cars have been kept off the final stretch during the day, so go early, late, or by bus. Alcúdia, with its Roman ruins and walled old town, is a short drive round the bay.

Cala Sant Vicenç is a small, quiet resort a few kilometres from the old town, with a handful of coves of clear water beneath the jagged ridge of the Cavall Bernat. It suits those who want a swim before breakfast and very little else.
Pollensa sits at the northern end of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the walking is excellent. The Boquer valley path from Port de Pollença to a small, stony cove takes around an hour each way and is well known to birdwatchers. The Puig de Maria, with a hilltop sanctuary above the town, is a stiffer climb. In spring, the lanes fill with cyclists who come for the mountain roads.

Eat as the town does: frit mallorquí, a fry-up of lamb and vegetables, tumbet, sobrassada on bread, and an ensaïmada with morning coffee. Grilled fish is the thing to order in the port. The town also has a summer music festival, held in the cloister of Santo Domingo since the 1960s.
May, June and September are the best months, warm enough to swim but without the July and August crowds. Spring and autumn suit walkers and cyclists, and January brings the Festa del Pi, when young men climb a stripped pine trunk in the town. Our concierge can arrange boat trips around Formentor, bike hire, tee times and restaurant tables.
