Villas in the Balearic Islands

Four islands, four temperaments, one short flight

The Balearics are often talked about as one place. They are not. Mallorca is big and varied, with a mountain range, a proper capital and a long coastline. Ibiza has more countryside and old farmhouses than its reputation would suggest. Menorca is green, low and calm, and Formentera is mostly sand, salt flats and very clear water. The trick is choosing the right island before you choose the villa.

Our Balearic collection runs to 2,200+ properties. They include stone fincas in the Mallorcan hills, sea-view villas above the Ibizan coves, houses close to Menorca's south-coast beaches and apartments in harbour towns such as Pollença and Cala Ratjada. Most have private pools.

Below is a guide to each island, what it does best and when to go.

Where to stay in the Balearic Islands

Pollença, Deià and Sóller for Mallorca's mountains and north coast, Santa Eulalia and Es Cubells for the gentler side of Ibiza, Sant Lluís and Ciutadella for Menorca, and Formentera for beaches and very little else.

Mountains, a cathedral city and two very different coasts

The largest island is also the one with the most range. The Serra de Tramuntana runs down the north-west coast and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Its villages, Deià, Valldemossa and Sóller, are made of honey-coloured stone and backed by terraced olive groves. Robert Graves lived and is buried in Deià, and Chopin spent a damp winter at Valldemossa.

Pollença, in the north, is the island's most popular villa base. It has an old town square, the Calvari steps and Cap de Formentor close by. The south-east is gentler, with small coves around Cala d'Or and Santanyí. Then there is Palma, with its Gothic cathedral on the seafront and the old wooden train up to Sóller.

Ibiza & Formentera

Far more countryside than nightclub

Ibiza's clubs sit around San Antonio and Playa d'en Bossa, and it is easy to stay well away from them. The north, around Sant Joan de Labritja, is all pine hills, whitewashed farmhouses and quiet coves. Santa Eulalia, on the east coast, is the family choice, with a riverside promenade and good restaurants. In the south-west, the villas around Es Cubells and Cala Vedella look out to the rock of Es Vedrà.

The walled old town of Dalt Vila is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and so are the seagrass meadows that keep the water so clear. Formentera is a short ferry ride south and is quieter still. Ses Illetes there is about as close to the Caribbean as the Mediterranean gets.

Menorca

The quiet island, and proud of it

Menorca has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. It has largely been spared the high-rise building seen elsewhere, and most of its coast is still undeveloped. Its prehistoric talaiotic stone monuments became a World Heritage Site in 2023. The Camí de Cavalls, an old bridleway, runs around the whole island and links one cove to the next on foot.

The two towns face each other from opposite ends. Mahón sits on a deep natural harbour with Georgian houses from the British period. Ciutadella, the old capital, is more Spanish in feel. Sant Lluís and the whitewashed fishing village of Binibequer Vell make good bases for the south-coast beaches.

Food & the Seasons

Ensaïmadas, lobster stew and a long, warm autumn

Each island has its own dishes. Mallorca has the spiral ensaïmada pastry for breakfast and sobrasada, a soft paprika sausage. Menorca makes Mahón cheese and gin, and around Fornells the dish to order is caldereta de langosta, a lobster stew. In Ibiza, try the local hierbas liqueur after lunch.

The beach season runs from May to October, and the sea is warmest in August and September. Spring is the best time for walking and cycling, and in early in the year Mallorca's almond trees blossom. In June, Ciutadella's Sant Joan festival fills the streets with horses. Our concierge can arrange boat charters, private chefs, restaurant tables, car hire and transfers.

Why book your Balearic Islands villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Each Balearic island has its own character, and so does each corner of each island. We know which villas are close to a quiet cove, which are within walking distance of a village square and which are well away from the noise. With 2,200+ properties in the Balearic Islands, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Boat charters to the coves and Formentera, private chefs, restaurant reservations, inter-island ferries, car hire and airport transfers in Palma, Ibiza and Menorca. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Balearic island is best for a villa holiday?

Mallorca has the widest choice of villas, with mountains, beaches and Palma all on one island. Ibiza suits people who want countryside, good food and coves, with nightlife if they want it. Menorca and Formentera are the quietest, and they suit families and couples who are happy with beaches and slow days.

When is the best time to visit the Balearic Islands?

May to October is best for the beach. July and August are the hottest and busiest months. June and September are often the best balance of warm sea and calmer roads, and spring is lovely for walking in Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana.

Can you travel between the islands?

Yes. Ferries link Mallorca with Ibiza and Menorca, including the crossing from Alcúdia to Ciutadella. Boats run often between Ibiza and Formentera, and there are short flights from Palma to the other islands. Many guests split a holiday between two islands.

Can you arrange a private chef at a villa in the Balearic Islands?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury villa in the Balearic Islands cost?

Across our 2,200+ villas in the Balearic Islands, weekly rates typically range from £2,000 to £8,700, with the most affordable from around £1,100 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to the Balearic Islands?

Palma, Ibiza and Menorca all have airports, with direct flights from across the UK of roughly two to two and a half hours. Formentera has no airport and is reached by ferry from Ibiza. Our concierge can arrange transfers from any of the airports.

Are there villas in the Balearic Islands for large groups?

Yes. Our Balearic Islands collection includes properties with up to 22 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
