Villas in Vilamoura

A marina, five fairways and a Roman villa by the sea

Vilamoura is the Algarve's planned resort, and it makes no secret of it. Laid out among umbrella pines between Quarteira and Albufeira, it has a marina with more than a thousand berths, five golf courses within a few minutes of one another and a long sandy beach. Beneath all the polish there is a first-century Roman villa, which rather puts the newcomers in their place.

Our Vilamoura collection runs to 60+ properties, from family villas with private pools set back among the golf courses to modern apartments in the centre, a short walk from the marina restaurants.

Here is how the resort fits together, where the beaches are and when to come.

Where to stay in Vilamoura

Central Vilamoura for the marina and its restaurants, the golf quarter for quiet villas among the pines, Quarteira for a proper Portuguese seafront, and Almancil and Vale do Lobo a short drive east.

The Marina & the Romans

Yachts by day, dinner on the quay

The marina is the heart of Vilamoura, the largest in Portugal, ringed by restaurants, bars and terraces that stay busy well into the evening. Boat trips leave from here for dolphin watching and for the caves and cliffs further west along the coast.

A few minutes' walk inland lies Cerro da Vila, the remains of a Roman villa from the first century, with baths, fragments of mosaic floors and tanks once used for salting fish. A small museum on the site explains it all, and it makes a cool, quiet hour away from the sun.

Golf

Five courses, no long drives

Vilamoura was built with golf in mind, and its five courses sit close enough together to play a different one each day without spending the morning in the car. The Old Course, laid out by Frank Pennink among mature pines, is the senior of the group. Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium follow, and the Dom Pedro Victoria, designed by Arnold Palmer, has hosted the Portugal Masters.

The championship courses of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, near Almancil, are only a short drive east, which makes Vilamoura a very good base for a week of serious golf.

Beaches & Quarteira

Ochre cliffs to the west, a fishing town to the east

West of the marina, Praia da Falésia runs for several kilometres beneath red and ochre cliffs, with beach clubs at the Vilamoura end and long, quiet stretches for walking further along. The marina beach itself is sheltered and good for small children.

East of the marina, a seafront promenade leads on foot to Quarteira, a working town with a fishing port, a fish market and plenty of plain, honest restaurants where the grilled catch of the day is the point. It is a welcome contrast to the marina.

Food & the Seasons

Grilled fish, a Saturday market and a long season

The table here belongs to the sea: grilled sardines in summer, clams cooked à Bulhão Pato with garlic and coriander, and cataplana, the copper-pot stew of fish and shellfish. Inland, Loulé's Moorish-style market hall and its busy Saturday market are worth the short drive for cheese, honey, almonds and figs.

The beach season runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest months. Spring and autumn bring the best golf weather, and the mild winters suit longer stays. Our concierge can book tee times, marina tables, boat trips and a private chef.

Why book your Vilamoura villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

With 60+ properties in Vilamoura, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Tee times on all five courses, marina restaurant reservations, boat and dolphin trips, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Faro. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay in Vilamoura?

Stay in central Vilamoura if you want to walk to the marina, its restaurants and the beach. The villas among the golf courses are quieter and greener, with the fairways on the doorstep, and Quarteira suits those who prefer a traditional Portuguese town.

When is the best time to visit Vilamoura?

May to October is best for the beach, and July and August are the busiest months. Spring and autumn are ideal for golf, and the mild winters are good for longer stays and quieter courses.

Is Vilamoura good for golf?

Very. Vilamoura has five courses close together: the Old Course, Pinhal, Laguna, Millennium and the Dom Pedro Victoria. The courses of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are a short drive away, and our concierge can book tee times.

Can you arrange a private chef at a villa in Vilamoura?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury villa in Vilamoura cost?

Across our 60+ villas in Vilamoura, weekly rates typically range from £1,000 to £3,500, with the most affordable from around £800 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Vilamoura?

Fly to Faro, around 25 kilometres east, which is usually 20 to 30 minutes by road. Public transport from the airport needs changes, so a private transfer or a hire car is far easier, and our concierge can arrange either.

Are there villas in Vilamoura for large groups?

Yes. Our Vilamoura collection includes properties with up to 7 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
