Sea-view villas at the western tip of Sicily, between the salt pans, the Zingaro coast and the Egadi Islands
As featured in
Trapani sits on a narrow spit of land at the western tip of Sicily, and its Greek name, Drepanon, means sickle, after the shape of that spit. Africa feels closer here than Rome does. You see it in the couscous on every menu and the whitewashed cubes of the old fishing villages. You see it too in the scirocco, which blows in hot and dusty from the south. Above the city, the medieval town of Erice keeps its head in the clouds at around 750 metres.
Our Trapani collection runs to 150+ properties. There are sea-view villas on the slopes of Valderice and San Giuliano, homes among the salt pans at Nubia and Marausa, apartments near San Vito Lo Capo and houses above the coves of Scopello. Many have pools, and several look straight out to Favignana.
Here is how the province fits together, and when to come.

Trapani's old town fills the end of its peninsula, with baroque churches, a long seafront and fish restaurants that know exactly what came in that morning. The Funivia cable car climbs from the edge of the city to Erice in around ten minutes. Up there you find cobbled lanes, Norman walls and almond pastries, and the town is often several degrees cooler than the coast below.
From Trapani's harbour, hydrofoils reach Favignana in around half an hour and Levanzo in less. Favignana is best explored by bicycle, with swims in the old tufa quarries at Cala Rossa. Marettimo, the farthest out, is the wildest of the three.

Scopello is a tiny village built around an old baglio. Below it stands one of the oldest tonnare in Sicily, a tuna fishery dating from the thirteenth century, with sea stacks rising out of very clear water just offshore.
Just beyond Scopello begins the Zingaro, Sicily's first nature reserve, created in 1981 after locals marched to stop a coastal road being built. Its seven kilometres of cliffs and pebble coves can only be reached on foot or by boat. At the far end, San Vito Lo Capo has a long arc of pale sand and the bulk of Monte Cofano for company.

South of the city, the salt pans of Trapani and Paceco are now a nature reserve. Shallow pools turn pink in summer and flamingos stop here, and the old windmills that once pumped seawater still stand. At Nubia, a small salt museum explains how it all worked.
Further south, in the Stagnone lagoon, a short boat ride takes you to Mozia, the island the Phoenicians made their base. Marsala, beyond, gave its name to the fortified wine the English merchants shipped home in the eighteenth century. Its cellars are well worth an afternoon, and sunset over the salt pans is the local habit before dinner.

Trapani's cooking leans towards North Africa. Fish couscous is the local dish, and busiate, twisted pasta, comes with pesto trapanese, a sauce of almonds, tomato, garlic and basil. Tuna, from the old tonnare, turns up everywhere.
May, June and September are the best months for the sea, without the heat and crowds of August. Each September, San Vito Lo Capo hosts the Cous Cous Fest, ten days of tastings and concerts on the beach. On Good Friday, Trapani's Processione dei Misteri carries carved wooden groups through the streets for close to a full day. Our concierge can book boat days, wine tastings and restaurant tables.
