Villas with private pools on a sheltered Dalmatian bay, between Šibenik and Split
As featured in
Rogoznica began as a refuge. In 1518, with the Ottoman army closing in, its people left the mainland for the small island of Kopara, and the island later became the old town when a causeway joined it to the shore. It still feels close to the sea: a compact place of stone houses and a waterfront of fishing boats, set in a deep bay well protected from the wind.
Our Rogoznica collection runs to 40 villas. Most are modern stone houses with private pools in Ražanj and Zečevo, the coastal villages just outside town, and a handful stand right on the water with steps down to the sea.
Here is how the coast divides up, what to do and when to come.

The old town sits on Kopara, which was an island until a gravel causeway joined it to the mainland in the nineteenth century. Its lanes climb from the harbour past the Church of St Nicholas to the top of the hill, where you will find the remains of a fort the French began building in 1809 and a small lavender labyrinth with long views over the bay.
Down on the waterfront, konobas serve the morning's catch and the evening walk is a fixed part of the day. A few smooth pebble and rock beaches are scattered around the island, a short walk from the cafés.

Most of our villas are in the villages along the coast. Ražanj is small and low-key, with clear water and coves. Zečevo, about three kilometres north of town, is much the same. Both suit families who want a pool and the sea within reach without the bustle of a resort.
South of Rogoznica, Cape Planka is where locals say the northern and southern Adriatic meet. The bura and the jugo winds fight over it, and the weather can turn on either side. A coastal path leads out to the thirteenth-century chapel of St John of Trogir, which is the place to be at sunset.

Marina Frapa is one of the best known marinas on this coast and a good base for chartering a boat or a skipper to explore the islands. Just behind it is the Dragon's Eye, or Zmajevo oko: a saltwater lake that formed when a cave collapsed, linked to the sea underground and ringed by cliffs that local teenagers leap off all summer. A summer event on the waterfront called the Awakening of the Dragon, held since 2015, retells its legend.
Šibenik, with its UNESCO-listed Cathedral of St James, is about half an hour north, and medieval Trogir is on the way to Split airport. The waterfalls of Krka National Park make an easy day out from either.

Dalmatian cooking is simple and good here: fish grilled over vine cuttings, black cuttlefish risotto, pršut with sheep's cheese, and peka, where meat or octopus is slow-cooked under an iron bell buried in embers. It needs ordering ahead, which our concierge is happy to arrange. Try a bottle of Babić, the red grown in the stone-walled vineyards of nearby Primošten.
Rogoznica gets around 2,600 hours of sunshine a year. June to September is the beach season, and the sea is warmest in August. May and late September are quieter and better for walking and cycling.

Yes. The lake is salty and warm, and in summer people swim and jump from the surrounding rocks. There is no beach, though, and getting in and out is a scramble, so most visitors just walk round the rim from Marina Frapa.
