Sea-view villas above the sunset coast, and country fincas among the almond groves of north-west Ibiza
As featured in
Mention San Antonio to most Britons and they picture a certain kind of holiday. That picture covers a few streets. The rest of the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany is something else entirely: a broad bay facing west, pine-backed coves with clear water, and behind them a quiet farming country of almond groves, vineyards and red earth that runs up to Santa Agnès and Sant Mateu.
Our San Antonio collection runs to 60+ villas, from contemporary houses on the hills above the bay, built for the view and the sunset, to whitewashed country estates around Sant Rafel. Almost all have private pools, and many look out to sea.
Here is how to choose your corner of it, and when to come.

The town sits at the head of a deep natural harbour, the Portus Magnus of the Romans, with the island of Sa Conillera guarding the mouth of the bay. Villas on the slopes above look straight out over it, which is the whole point: on this coast the day ends with the sun dropping into the sea.
North of town, Cala Gració and its little neighbour Cala Gracioneta are sheltered and shallow, good for children. Further on, Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta lie at the foot of a steep, pine-covered road. Car access is restricted in high summer, so an early start or a boat is the civilised answer. In the other direction, small boats cross the bay from the harbour to Cala Bassa and Cala Comte.

Drive ten minutes inland and Ibiza's farming past is still very much present. Sant Mateu d'Albarca sits in a fertile valley of vines and citrus, and its whitewashed church dates from the late eighteenth century. Neighbouring Santa Agnès de Corona is known across the island for its almond blossom, which turns the valley white in late January and February, and for the cliff walks above the north-west coast.
Sant Rafel, on the road to Ibiza Town, has ceramic workshops and a church terrace with a fine view across to Dalt Vila. The country estates here put the beaches of the west and the restaurants of the capital within equally easy reach.

Away from the bars, Sant Antoni is a working harbour town with a fortified parish church, a palm-lined promenade along the Passeig de ses Fonts and a marina full of fishing boats and day cruisers. The cave aquarium at Cap Blanc, near Cala Gració, is a reliable success with children.
The town's big day is Sant Bartomeu on 24 August, when weeks of concerts, sport and a mock battle of Carthaginians and Romans end with a fireworks display over the bay. Watching it from a terrace on the hillside is one of the better reasons to come in August.

The island's cooking is robust and rural: bullit de peix, a fish stew followed by rice cooked in the broth, sofrit pagès with meat and sausage, and flaó, a mint-scented cheesecake. Sant Mateu's country wine, red and rustic, is celebrated each year with a festival in the village square as winter approaches.
The sea is warm from June to October, and September is perhaps the best month of all. Spring brings wild flowers and empty footpaths, and late winter belongs to the almond blossom. Our concierge can book boats, sunset tables and transfers, and suggest which coves to reach before the crowds.
