One great city, and the beaches and hills it runs to at weekends

Most people say New York and mean the city, and the city is reason enough: the museums, the theatres, the restaurants, and the simple pleasure of walking from one neighbourhood into the next and finding it entirely different. The state stretches well beyond the five boroughs, though, and New Yorkers know it. On summer Fridays they head east to the Atlantic beaches of the Hamptons. In October they head north to the Hudson Valley for the leaves.

Our New York State collection runs to 320+ homes. Most are apartments in Manhattan and Brooklyn, from lofts in NoHo and SoHo to family-sized flats on the Upper East Side, some with roof terraces, gyms or saunas. Out east and up the Hudson there are houses with pools and gardens. The largest property has 8 bedrooms.

Here is how the city, the coast and the valley compare, and when to come.

Where to stay in New York State

The West Village, SoHo and the Upper East Side for Manhattan, Williamsburg and Long Island City across the East River, the Hamptons from Westhampton Beach to Montauk for summer, and New Paltz and Woodstock for the Hudson Valley.

New York City

Choose the neighbourhood, then the apartment

Most of our collection is in New York City, and here the neighbourhood matters more than the building. The West Village and Greenwich Village are low-rise and leafy, with brownstones, small restaurants and excellent people-watching. SoHo, NoHo and Tribeca are loft country, with cast-iron façades above shops and galleries. Chelsea has the High Line, an old freight railway raised above the streets and turned into a garden walk.

Uptown, the Upper East Side and Yorkville put Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art within easy reach, and Harlem has brownstone streets, jazz clubs and soul food. Across the East River, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Long Island City look back at the Manhattan skyline.

The Hamptons

Dunes, privet hedges and a whaling port

Around a hundred miles east of Manhattan, on the South Fork of Long Island, the Hamptons are where New York goes for the summer. Westhampton Beach and Hampton Bays come first, then Southampton, East Hampton and Amagansett, with wide Atlantic beaches backed by dunes and shingled houses behind tall hedges.

On the bay side, an old whaling port has a proper main street and a harbour full of yachts. Shelter Island, a short ferry ride away, is quieter still. Montauk, at the far end, is more casual and draws surfers. It has a lighthouse commissioned under George Washington, and its lobster rolls are eaten at picnic tables.

The Hudson Valley

Orchards, cliffs and an artists' town

North of the city, the Hudson Valley is river views, orchards, farm shops and small towns with surprisingly good restaurants. New Paltz sits beneath the Shawangunk Ridge, much loved by rock climbers, with the Mohonk Mountain House above it and a street of stone Huguenot houses from the early eighteenth century.

Woodstock, in the foothills of the Catskills, still feels like an artists' colony, although the 1969 festival was in fact held at Bethel, more than an hour's drive away. For a cultural day out, Dia Beacon fills a former Nabisco box-printing factory with large-scale art, and Storm King sets its sculpture across open fields.

Food & the Seasons

Pastrami, sweetcorn and October leaves

New York eats well at every price: a bagel with cream cheese, pastrami on rye at Katz's on the Lower East Side, a folded slice of pizza, and tasting menus booked weeks ahead. Out east there are farm stands piled with sweetcorn and tomatoes in August, and vineyards on the North Fork. Up the Hudson, autumn means cider and pick-your-own apples.

Spring and autumn are the best months in the city. Summer in Manhattan is hot and humid, and that is when the Hamptons are at their best, from late May to early September. The Hudson Valley leaves usually turn in October, and December brings the Christmas tree on Rockefeller Plaza. Our concierge can arrange restaurant tables, theatre tickets, transfers and car hire.
