Chalets in Val d'Isère

A proper mountain village with a serious ski area attached

Val d'Isère manages a trick few big resorts pull off: it is a real Savoyard village, with a stone church, a main street of old chalets and people who live there all year, and it also sits at the heart of one of the finest ski areas in the world. The village is at around 1,850 metres, the glacier above it runs higher still, and the season reliably stretches from late November into early May.

Our Val d'Isère collection runs to 130+ chalets, from traditional wood and stone chalets in the old village to contemporary houses with indoor pools and cinema rooms in Le Fornet and La Daille. Many are fully catered, with a chef, a host and a driver, and the best of them have the piste running past the boot room door.

Below is a guide to the different corners of the resort, the skiing, and how to get there.

Val d'Isère and its neighbours

The old village for character and restaurants, Le Fornet for a quiet hamlet with its own cable car, La Daille for fast access to the Funival, and Tignes over the ridge for even more skiing.

Three very different places to stay

The centre of Val d'Isère is where most of the life is: the old church, the shops, the bars and the restaurants, with the Solaise and Bellevarde lifts a short walk away. Chalets here put everything within strolling distance, which matters more than people think when the boots are heavy and the children are tired.

Le Fornet, a hamlet up the valley, is quieter and more traditional, with its own cable car into the ski area and a handful of very good chalets. La Daille, at the other end, is the place for keen skiers in a hurry, with the Funival railway climbing straight to the top of Bellevarde.

Espace Killy, the Face and a long, high season

Val d'Isère and Tignes share the Espace Killy, named after Jean-Claude Killy, the local skier who won three Olympic golds in 1968. It is a huge, high and varied area, with long cruising runs, glacier skiing on the Pissaillas and some of the most celebrated off-piste in France for those with a guide.

The Face de Bellevarde was built for the men's downhill at the 1992 Albertville Olympics and remains a proper test. Each December the resort hosts the Critérium de la Première Neige, an early World Cup race that marks the start of the season for many racing fans.

Après & Dining

From table-dancing to tasting menus

Val d'Isère is where the mountain-side après party was more or less invented, and the late afternoon on Bellevarde has a reputation that precedes it. In the village, the evenings run from cosy Savoyard restaurants serving fondue and tartiflette to some of the finest dining in the Alps.

For quieter days, there are snowshoe walks, husky rides, ice driving and spa afternoons, and the village itself is a pleasure to wander after dark. Our concierge can book tables, guides and activities well ahead of the busiest weeks.

Getting There & When to Go

Snow from late November, sunshine in spring

Geneva, Chambéry and Lyon are the usual airports, with private transfers taking around three to four hours from Geneva depending on traffic. The nearest railway station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, about forty minutes down the valley.

Thanks to its altitude, Val d'Isère is one of the safest bets for early and late season snow. December and January bring cold, quiet slopes, February is busiest with school holidays, and March and April offer long sunny days with the snow still good on the higher runs.
