Most people come to the Veneto for Venice, and nobody could blame them. But the region goes well beyond the lagoon. It runs from the Adriatic shore across the plain of Padua and Treviso, up through the prosecco hills to the Dolomites around Belluno, and west to Verona and the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Between them lie Palladio's villas, Giotto's frescoes and a great deal of very good wine.

San Marco and Dorsoduro for the heart of Venice, Cannaregio and Castello for a quieter, more residential city, Padua and Treviso for good food and easy trains, and Belluno for the Dolomites.
Six sestieri, each with its own temper
San Marco is the grand set piece, with the Basilica, the Doge's Palace and La Fenice all a short walk apart. Dorsoduro, across the Accademia bridge, is the city's gallery quarter: the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the sunny promenade of the Zattere, where Venetians take their evening walk.
Cannaregio is where Venice still feels lived in, with the old Ghetto, long fondamenta lined with bacari and some of the best cicchetti in town. Castello, out towards the Arsenale and the Biennale gardens, is quieter still. Staying in an apartment rather than a hotel means you see the city when the day-trippers have gone home, and that is when Venice is at its best.

Opera in an arena, Giotto in a chapel
Verona's Roman Arena still stages opera on summer nights, and the old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Padua, around half an hour from Venice by fast train, has Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel, one of the oldest universities in Europe and lively market squares where the spritz is taken seriously.
Between and around them are the villas of Andrea Palladio, which shaped country houses from Virginia to Wiltshire. Several line the Brenta Riviera between Padua and Venice, and Vicenza has the greatest concentration of his work.

Canals, vineyards and a lot of mountain
Treviso is a small, prosperous city of canals and frescoed arcades, and it claims tiramisù as its own. To the north, the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, where prosecco is made, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an afternoon among the small cantine there is time well spent.
Further north still, the province of Belluno climbs into the Dolomites, another UNESCO site, with Cortina d'Ampezzo, co-host of the 2026 Winter Olympics, at its heart. Our apartments here suit skiers in winter and walkers in summer.

Cicchetti, risotto and a calendar of festivals
Venetian food is lagoon food: sarde in saor, risotto al nero di seppia, moeche (soft-shell crabs) in spring and autumn, and small plates of cicchetti with a glass of wine at the counter. Inland you will find bigoli pasta, Amarone from the Valpolicella and, in winter, Treviso's bitter red radicchio.
Spring and early autumn are the loveliest times to visit. Carnival falls in February, the Redentore fireworks light up the lagoon in July and the Regata Storica fills the Grand Canal in September. Our concierge can arrange water taxis, private guides, opera tickets and restaurant tables.

Yes. Fast trains from Venice Santa Lucia reach Padua in around half an hour and Verona in just over an hour, so both make easy day trips.
