Lakes, a great city and a long table in between

Few Italian regions give you so much within an hour's drive. Lombardy has Milan, the country's capital of fashion, design and money, with Leonardo's Last Supper in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It also has the deep, mountain-ringed waters of Lake Como, the Lombard shores of Garda and Maggiore, and the Renaissance courts of Mantua and Sabbioneta.

Our Lombardy collection runs to 440+ homes. On the lakes there are villas above the water at Moltrasio, Argegno and Tremezzo, some with infinity pools, and apartments in old palazzi at Varenna. In Milan there are apartments with designer interiors in Brera, San Babila and the streets around the Quadrilatero, and further south and east, villas with pools in the countryside near Brescia and Mantua.

Here is how the region divides, and how to choose between lake and city.

Where to stay in Lombardy

Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Cernobbio for villas on Lake Como, Brera and the centre of Milan for city apartments, and Brescia for Lake Garda, Franciacorta and Mantua.

Lake Como

Ferries, gardens and villages stacked above the water

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, and Bellagio sits on the point where its arms meet, with the gardens of Villa Melzi at the water's edge. Across the lake, Varenna climbs steeply from its little harbour towards the Castello di Vezio, while Tremezzo has Villa Carlotta and its famous spring azaleas. Villa del Balbianello at Lenno is close by.

The western shore, from Cernobbio and Moltrasio up through Argegno and Ossuccio, is where most of the grand villas stand. The Greenway footpath runs from Colonno to Griante, past Isola Comacina and the chapels of the Sacro Monte. The ferries are the best way to get about, and lunch on the other side of the lake makes an easy outing.

Milan

A city that rewards those who stay

Milan is often treated as a place to change planes, which is a pity. The Duomo roof terraces look out to the Alps on a clear day, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is still the city's grand meeting place, and the Pinacoteca di Brera holds Mantegna, Raphael and Caravaggio.

Brera is the neighbourhood for galleries and evening walks, the Quadrilatero and San Babila for the fashion houses, and the canals of the Navigli, near Porta Ticinese, for aperitivo at dusk. The opera season at La Scala opens each year on 7 December, the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, the city's patron saint. An apartment here makes Milan feel like home for a week rather than a stopover.

Brescia, Garda & Mantua

Roman stones, sparkling wine and Renaissance courts

Brescia is one of the less hurried cities in northern Italy. Its Roman Capitolium and the monastery of Santa Giulia are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Between the city and Lake Iseo lie the vineyards of Franciacorta, Italy's answer to Champagne.

To the east, the Lombard shore of Lake Garda runs from Sirmione, with its moated castle and Roman villa ruins, up through Salò and Gardone Riviera, where Gabriele d'Annunzio's eccentric Vittoriale is open to visitors. Further south, Mantua has Mantegna's frescoed Camera degli Sposi in the Palazzo Ducale and Giulio Romano's Palazzo Te. Country villas around here suit those who want space, a pool and quieter roads.

Food & the Seasons

Saffron risotto, lake fish and choosing your month

Lombard cooking is richer than the Italian food most British visitors know. Milan gives you saffron risotto, ossobuco and the cotoletta, and panettone at Christmas. Around Lake Como you will find missoltini, sun-dried shad from the lake, served with polenta. Mantua is known for tortelli di zucca, pumpkin pasta with a hint of sweetness.

On the lakes the season runs roughly from Easter to October. April to June and September are the loveliest months, and July and August are warm and busy. Milan is at its liveliest in spring and autumn, and much of it closes around Ferragosto in mid-August. Our concierge can arrange boat hire on Lake Como, Last Supper tickets, La Scala seats and Franciacorta tastings.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
