Rent Chateau Otocec Slovenia
Holiday Home Rental Description
Stunningly situated on an island in the middle of the Krka River stands one of Slovenia’s most beautiful castles – Chateau Otocec. Built over eight centuries ago and renovated in a gothic Renaissance style, this cultural monument boasts 16 bedrooms accommodating up to 32 people and is nothing short of magical.
Surrounded by the emerald Krka River with its white Mute Swans and lush greenery, Chateau Otocec is steeped in history and patiently waits across the centuries for those seeking a harmonious blend of elegance and opulent comfort.
The first historical reference to the Chateau dates all the way back to 1252 when it was part of the Lower Carniolan Freising estate administered by the de Werde nobles (known as Islet Knights), though the origins of the Chateau remain shrouded in mystery. Over the centuries, the Chateau has changed hands innumerable times until it was seized by Italian forces in World War II and used as a fortress. In 1942, the Chateau was burnt to ruins by the Partisans. After decades of renovation work, Chateau Otocec now stands redeemed to its former glory and houses one of Slovenia’s most sought-after accommodations.
A sense of timeless beauty unfolds as you step through the grand entrance. The Chateau effortlessly combines the traditional charm of its thick walls and reaching towers with lavish modern amenities.
The Chateau boasts 16 bedrooms of various sizes, and all are uniquely decorated. Ten rooms are doubles, great for two people and complete with ensuite bathroom and views over the river and park. Two junior suites offer bedrooms for 2, a spacious living area crafted from natural materials, and ensuite bathrooms with an angle bathroom and bidet.
The two senior suites are ideal for families of 4 as each boasts two separate bedrooms with views over the chateau tower and wooden river bridge. These rooms come complete with king-sized beds, a divan, a table and chairs, and a smaller bedroom perfect for the kids. An ensuite bathroom with an angle bathtub, separate shower, and two washbasins provides everything necessary for the ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation.
Finally, the two Royal Suites seek to provide the greatest comfort imaginable, all with breathtaking views over the emerald Krka River and Chateau Terrace. Entering the suites reveals a reception and meeting room with a table for up to 8 people. The spacious bedrooms are furnished with a king-sized bed and a décor of soft, earthly colours. And, of course, commodious bathrooms that come complete with an angle bathtub and rain shower.
The Chateau Otocec Restaurant is renowned for the creative complexity of its dishes, all made using fresh ingredients from the Chateau’s own organic garden while incorporating modern culinary trends with traditions of the Dolenjska region. The restaurant can seat 45 people but also serves in the Hunting Room, the Knight’s Room, and the Chateau Terrace. Guests also have use of the sports facilities at the Sport hotel 300m from Chateau Otoce, which includes swimming pools, saunas and tennis courts.
Whether you’re lounging in the garden, enjoying a glass of local wine on the sprawling Chateau Terrace, or unwinding in the Chateau’s stunning selection of common areas and historical chambers, Chateau Otocec transcends expectations, offering an utterly unique and enchanting escape, a fortified perch with the river running around it.

Chateau Otocec is spectacularly located on an island in the emerald Krka River, its flow running around the grand historical structure as it has for hundreds of years. This is a serene escape in the charming Dolenjska region, brimming with green meadows, lush vineyards, vast deciduous woodlands and underground hot springs.
For the wine lovers amongst us, prepare to be treated because Chateau Otocec recently converted one of its towers into a top-notch winery. Viticulture has a long tradition in the Dolenjska region, particularly its renowned varietal – Cviček – produced in the surrounding hills where the cellars of little vineyard cottages are brimming with barrels. The attractive, circular space hosts up to 15 people and is not only home to a valuable range of domestic and international wines, but also offers guests the option of a guided tasting session.
Just a stone’s throw from Chateau Otocec, or rather, just a 7-iron-distance away, is an 18-hole golf course situated on beautiful, rolling terrain. Designed by renowned British architect Howard Swan, Golf Grad Otočec boasts 6,200m of course length, 26 bunkers, 6 water obstacles, and 5 tees to each green, ensuring players of all levels can feel welcome. The course also offers pitch-and-putt facilities, a driving range, and a practice putting green with bunker – so even if you just want to swing the clubs without playing a full round, there’s plenty of opportunity.
For the anglers amongst us the emerald Krka river is home to 32 different fish species, including Huchen, Wels and Danube Roach – all great fish for angling!
The nearby Smarjeske Toplice Spa and Dolenjske Toplice Spa offer the perfect opportunity to relax in thermal pools and wellness centres – ensuring a luxurious bodily recovery while on vacation.
