Country villas and farmhouses between the Apennines and the Adriatic, from Urbino to Ascoli Piceno and the Conero coast
As featured in
The Marche runs from the spine of the Apennines down to the Adriatic in a series of parallel valleys. Each has its own hill towns, walled villages and fields of sunflowers and wheat. The region has Renaissance Urbino, an unusual number of old town theatres, a white limestone headland at Monte Conero and a cooking style all its own. Even so, it stays far quieter than Tuscany or Umbria on the other side of the mountains. The Italians who holiday here would rather keep it that way.
Our collection in Le Marche runs to 130+ properties. There are restored stone farmhouses and country villas with pools in the hills around Macerata, Fermo and Urbino, larger houses of up to 16 bedrooms for family gatherings, and apartments with sea views in Sirolo, above the Riviera del Conero.
This guide covers the provinces, the coast and the calendar.

Urbino was the court of Federico da Montefeltro. His Ducal Palace now houses the National Gallery of the Marche and is one of the finest buildings of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael was born a few streets away, and the whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The countryside around Urbino, the old Montefeltro, is high, wooded and thinly populated, with villas in the hills towards Apecchio and the Metauro valley. On the coast, Pesaro is Rossini's birthplace and holds the Rossini Opera Festival each summer. In autumn, the white truffle fair at nearby Acqualagna fills the diary.

South of Ancona, Monte Conero rises sharply out of the Adriatic. It is a limestone headland of pine and holm oak, protected as a regional park. Sirolo and Numana sit on its slopes. Sirolo's small piazza looks straight out to sea, and in summer boats run to the Due Sorelle, two white sea stacks above a beach most visitors reach by water.
Inland, Loreto draws pilgrims to the Holy House, and Recanati keeps the family library of the poet Giacomo Leopardi. The Frasassi caves, among the largest in Italy, are around an hour's drive to the west.

The south of the region is farmhouse country, with rolling hills between Macerata, Fermo and the Sibillini mountains. Macerata holds its summer opera festival in the Sferisterio, an open-air arena built in the nineteenth century for a ball game. Fermo sits on its hilltop above vast Roman cisterns.
Ascoli Piceno is built almost entirely of travertine, and its Piazza del Popolo is one of the most elegant squares in Italy. Every summer it stages the Quintana, a joust in Renaissance costume. The Monti Sibillini National Park, with serious walking, is within easy reach.

The Marche eats well and without fuss. Ascoli gave Italy olive all'ascolana, large green olives stuffed with meat, breaded and fried. Macerata has vincisgrassi, a rich baked pasta, and every port on the coast swears its own brodetto, the fish stew, is the right one. To drink, there is Verdicchio from the Castelli di Jesi and red Rosso Conero.
The beach season runs from June to September, and in August Italian families fill the coast. May, June and September are the best months for touring the hill towns. October brings truffles, the grape harvest and empty roads. Our concierge can book opera tickets, boat trips along the Conero, cookery lessons and restaurant tables.

With 130+ properties in the Marche, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Opera tickets for Macerata and Pesaro, boat trips along the Conero, truffle hunts, cookery lessons, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Ancona. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
For Renaissance art and wooded, empty hills, stay around Urbino. For farmhouses with long views and easy access to both the sea and the mountains, choose the hills between Macerata and Fermo. If you want to walk to the beach and to dinner, Sirolo on the Conero coast is the best base.
May to October is the main season. July and August bring the opera festivals at Macerata and Pesaro and the warmest sea, though the coast gets busy in August. Late spring and early autumn are ideal for the hill towns, walking and truffles.
The landscape is similar, with hill towns, vineyards and farmhouses. The Marche has far fewer visitors, though, and it adds a long Adriatic coastline with sandy beaches. It suits those who want the Italian countryside without the crowds.
