Bookshops, cheese and a crooked lane
Marylebone High Street is the spine of the neighbourhood and the reason many people come back. Daunt Books, with its long oak galleries and shelves arranged by country, is a fine place to plan the rest of a trip. Around the corner on Moxon Street, La Fromagerie and The Ginger Pig deal seriously in cheese and meat.
Marylebone Lane follows the course of the old Tyburn stream, which is why it bends where every other street runs straight. On Sunday mornings the farmers' market sets up on Cramer Street, just behind the High Street, and half the neighbourhood turns up with a basket.

Fragonard, chamber music and Mr Holmes
Hertford House on Manchester Square holds the Wallace Collection, a free museum of French paintings, armour and furniture. Its best-known pictures are Fragonard's The Swing and Frans Hals' The Laughing Cavalier. Wigmore Hall, opened in 1901, is one of the best places in the world to hear chamber music, and its Sunday morning concerts are a civilised London habit.
Baker Street brings the Sherlock Holmes Museum and, rather less quietly, Madame Tussauds. Harley Street and Wimpole Street keep their medical brass plates, and St Marylebone Parish Church is where Robert Browning married Elizabeth Barrett in 1846.
Roses, Shakespeare and the zoo next door
Regent's Park was laid out by John Nash, whose cream stucco terraces still line its edges. Queen Mary's Gardens, inside the Inner Circle, hold London's largest rose collection and are at their best in June. The Open Air Theatre puts on plays and musicals through the summer, and a picnic before the curtain is part of the evening.
For families, London Zoo sits on the park's northern side, and there are boating lakes and playgrounds. Lord's Cricket Ground is a short walk away in St John's Wood.

Marylebone eats well at every level, from neighbourhood bistros and wine bars on the High Street to some of London's most talked-about tables in the side streets. Selfridges, on the Oxford Street edge, has a food hall worth the detour.
