Tennessee has two very different holidays in it. In the middle of the state, Nashville sounds the way it does because of the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand Ole Opry and the bars on Lower Broadway, where live music starts before lunch. Three or four hours east, the Great Smoky Mountains rise on the North Carolina border, wooded, misty and protected as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Choosing your corner of Music City
Germantown, just north of downtown, is a grid of restored brick houses and some of the city's best restaurants, with the Nashville Farmers' Market and Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park a short walk away. Edgehill and Belmont, to the south, sit close to Music Row, where much of the city's recording business still happens.
Families tend to prefer the west side. Sylvan Park has tree-lined streets and easy parks, Berry Hill is a tiny independent city full of recording studios, and Belle Meade is the leafy, well-to-do end of town, with Cheekwood's gardens and art museum on its edge. Across the Cumberland River, East Nashville is younger and more bohemian, with good coffee and Five Points for an evening out.
From the Mother Church to a Tuesday night writers' round
The Ryman Auditorium, opened in 1892 as a gospel tabernacle, is still the best place in town to hear anything at all, and the Grand Ole Opry, first broadcast in 1925, is the longest-running radio show in America. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum takes a good half day, even for the sceptical.
The real pleasure, though, is smaller rooms: writers' nights where the people who wrote the hits play them on an acoustic guitar. For something unexpected, there is a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, built for the state's centennial exposition in 1897.

Gatlinburg, Sevierville and the high ridges
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States, and with good reason: old-growth forest, waterfalls, black bears and some 800 miles of trails. Kuwohi, formerly Clingmans Dome, is the highest point in Tennessee, and the Cades Cove loop is best driven early, before everyone else wakes up.
Gatlinburg sits right at the park entrance. Sevierville, Dolly Parton's home county seat, is a little further out and quieter, with Dollywood in neighbouring Pigeon Forge for families. Our homes here suit people who want the mountains on the doorstep and a hot tub waiting at the end of the day.

Hot chicken, meat and three, and fireflies in June
Nashville hot chicken, fried and then coated in a fierce cayenne paste, is the city's great contribution to the table, and a meat and three, a plate of one meat with three sides, is the proper weekday lunch. Tennessee whiskey is made at distilleries across the state, Jack Daniel's at Lynchburg being the best known.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months, since July and August can be hot and humid. CMA Fest fills Nashville in June, and in the Smokies, the synchronous fireflies of Elkmont light up for a couple of weeks around early June, while the autumn colour peaks in October.
