Sea-view villas on the quiet south-west coast of Mykonos, looking straight across the water to Delos
As featured in
Agios Ioannis is a small bay on the south-west coast of Mykonos, about four kilometres from Chora, and a world away from the island's party beaches. A whitewashed chapel stands by the shore, fishing boats tie up at the little sea wall, and across the channel lies Delos, the sacred island of the ancient Greeks. British readers of a certain age will know the beach already: this is where Shirley Valentine was filmed in 1989.
Our Agios Ioannis collection runs to 40 properties, almost all with sea views and many with infinity pools. They range from apartments in small villa complexes on the hillside above the bay to large houses for family gatherings and groups of friends, the biggest with 16 bedrooms.
What follows covers the bay itself, its neighbours and when to come.

The beach at Agios Ioannis is split in two by a rocky outcrop. One side has sunbeds and umbrellas; the other is quieter, the sort of place where you simply put your towel down on the sand. The water is shallow close to shore, which families with small children appreciate.
A handful of tavernas serve grilled fish and local dishes by the water. The bay faces west, so evenings here belong to the sunset, with Delos slowly turning dark against the sky. For something smaller still, the cove of Kapari lies just around the headland.

No other part of Mykonos has quite such a clear view of Delos. In myth it was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and for centuries it was one of the great sanctuaries of the Greek world. Today the whole island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Terrace of the Lions, mosaic-floored houses and a fine small museum.
Boats run from the old harbour in Mykonos Town through the summer, and the crossing takes about half an hour. Go early, before the heat builds, and take a hat: there is very little shade among the ruins.
Explore Mykonos

Agios Ioannis is quiet, but it is not remote. Ornos, with its sheltered sandy bay and restaurants, is next door, and Chora is a short drive away, with the windmills, the lanes of Little Venice and the island's best tables and bars.
Further along the south coast, Psarou and Platis Gialos have the smart beach clubs, and Elia has one of the longest stretches of sand on the island. Many guests find this the best arrangement: a peaceful house to come back to, with the livelier Mykonos just down the road.

Mykonian cooking is simple and very good. Look for kopanisti, a sharp, peppery local cheese, and louza, the island's cured pork, alongside fresh fish and tomatoes that taste of the sun.
The season runs from May to October. July and August are hot, busy and often windy, as the meltemi blows down the Aegean. June and September are, for many, the best months, with warm seas and a calmer island. Our concierge can arrange a private chef, boat trips to Delos, restaurant tables in Chora and transfers.
