Alcúdia lies on a neck of land between two great bays in the north of Mallorca. On one side is the Bay of Pollença, on the other the long, shallow Bay of Alcúdia. The Romans spotted its value early and built Pollentia here. The Moors gave it its name, which in Arabic means the town on the hill, and the walled old town that stands today grew up beside the Roman ruins.

Walls you can walk, and a market twice a week
Alcúdia's old town is ringed by medieval walls, and you can walk sections of the ramparts for views over the rooftops to the mountains. Within them are sandstone lanes, the neo-Gothic church of Sant Jaume and a fair number of good restaurants set around shaded squares.
On Tuesday and Sunday mornings the market takes over the streets, with fruit, cheeses, cured meats and olives alongside leather and ceramics. Get there early, or skip those mornings if you want the walls to yourself. Just outside the gates are the remains of Roman Pollentia, theatre included, and a small museum displays finds from the site.

Shallow water, long sand and a headland to climb
The Bay of Alcúdia curves south from the port towards Platja de Muro and Can Picafort, with fine sand and water that stays shallow a long way out. Few beaches in the Mediterranean are kinder to small children.
For something wilder, head east of town onto the Victòria peninsula. The road passes Bonaire and Mal Pas and leads to the hermitage of La Victòria, where paths climb through pine woods to the Talaia d'Alcúdia lookout. On a clear day you can see across both bays. The cove of Coll Baix is reached on foot, and that alone keeps it quiet.

Wetlands, Pollença and a boat to Menorca
Just south of the port, the S'Albufera natural park protects a large stretch of wetland. Its boardwalks and hides are some of the best birdwatching on the island, especially in spring.
Pollença, with its Calvari steps and Sunday market, is a short drive away. So is Sa Pobla, a farming town that lights bonfires each January for the feast of Sant Antoni. Ferries leave Port d'Alcúdia for Ciutadella on Menorca, which makes a day on the neighbouring island an easy addition to a week here.

Sant Jaume, sobrassada and a long, warm autumn
The town's great week comes in late July, with the Festes de Sant Jaume. There are concerts and dancing inside the walls, and on the feast day, 25 July, it ends with fireworks over the ramparts. Late summer brings jazz to the old town.
At the table, look out for sobrassada, frit mallorquí and tumbet, and an ensaïmada with your morning coffee. May, June and September are the best months for most people: warm sea, open restaurants, fewer crowds. July and August are hot and lively.
