Camps Bay has a long curve of white sand and a row of palms along Victoria Road. Behind it rise the Twelve Apostles, the craggy western face of Table Mountain, with Lion's Head standing guard to the north. It is Cape Town's most sociable beach suburb, yet it is only a short drive over Kloof Nek to the city, and the sunsets over the Atlantic draw a crowd most evenings.

Camps Bay itself for the beach and restaurants, the kloofs above it for privacy and mountain views, Bakoven for small coves, and Clifton for sheltered beaches just to the north.
Beachfront, kloofs and coves
The lower streets of Camps Bay run down to the beach and the strip of restaurants and cafés along Victoria Road. Apartments here are best if you want to walk to the sand in the morning and to dinner at night.
Further up the slope, the quiet roads of the kloofs climb towards the Twelve Apostles. Villas here are more private, often with heated pools, and the views take in both the mountain and the bay. A little to the south, Bakoven is smaller and quieter, with granite boulders and small coves where the road bends towards Llandudno.

Table Mountain from the back door
Camps Bay sits right against Table Mountain National Park, and that is half its appeal. At the top of Theresa Avenue a jeep track leads to the Pipe Track, a level path along the Apostles with views over the bay. It is also the start of Kasteelspoort, a steep climb to the famous Diving Board rock, high above the Atlantic.
Lion's Head, at around 669 metres, is the classic early morning or full moon walk, and the cable car is a short drive away on the city side. Our concierge can arrange a guide for any of these routes.

Clifton, Chapman's Peak and the vineyards
Clifton's four small beaches, just north along the coast, are sheltered by granite boulders and are a good refuge when the wind gets up. Drive south and the coast road passes Llandudno and Hout Bay before Chapman's Peak Drive, carved into the cliffs above the sea.
The V&A Waterfront and the city centre are a short drive over Kloof Nek. For a longer day out, the Constantia valley is close by, and Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are around an hour away in the Winelands.

Sundowners, snoek and the Cape Doctor
The southern summer, from November to March, brings long, dry days and the best of the beach life, though the south-easterly wind, known locally as the Cape Doctor, can blow hard in the afternoons. Spring and autumn are quieter and very good for walking. South Africa is only an hour or two ahead of the UK, so there is little jet lag to speak of.
