Ask a Cypriot about Famagusta and you may hear about two places. The walled old city lies across the Green Line, in the north of the island. The district's southern corner, in the Republic, is where the holidays happen: Protaras and Ayia Napa on the coast, Paralimni inland, and the red-soil farming villages behind them, all within an hour or so of Larnaca.

Protaras for Fig Tree Bay and the easiest beach days, Pernera for a quieter base on the same coast, Paralimni for a working Cypriot town, and Sotira for village life among the red-soil fields.
Shallow water and a chapel on the rock
Protaras grew up around Fig Tree Bay, a curve of pale sand with shallow, very clear water, and families come back to it year after year. The rest of the resort is a run of smaller bays along the coast road, so you can easily try a different beach each morning.
Above the town, the chapel of Profitis Ilias sits on a rocky outcrop, reached by around 150 steps. It was built in 1984 on the site of an older chapel, and the view over Protaras and the sea is your reward for the climb. Look out too for the Hellenistic tombs on the headland at Fig Tree Bay, a reminder that people chose this shore long before the sunbeds arrived.

A quieter shore and a real town
Pernera carries on north from Protaras. It is a quieter stretch of small beaches and rocky inlets, and evenings here are more likely to end at a fish taverna than at a bar. A good share of our villas are here, close to Protaras without being in the thick of it.
Paralimni, inland, runs the whole coast and is a working Cypriot town. Its name refers to the seasonal lake beside it. In neighbouring Deryneia, a viewing point looks across the Green Line to the long-abandoned resort quarter of Varosha. It is a sobering hour, and a worthwhile one.

Sea caves, a stone arch and a Venetian cloister
South of Protaras, Cape Greco is a national forest park of low limestone cliffs and water clear enough to watch the fish from the path. Waymarked trails link Konnos Bay, the little chapel of Agioi Anargyroi, built above a sea cave, and the natural arch of Kamara tou Koraka. The sea caves themselves can only be reached from the water, so take a boat or a kayak.
Ayia Napa lies just beyond. It has earned its reputation for nightlife, but its centre is a monastery the Venetians built around 1500, which stays cool and quiet in the heat of the day.

Red soil, taro and a festival of the flood
The villages behind the coast are the Kokkinochoria, named for the red soil that grows the potatoes Cypriots will tell you are the island's best. Sotira, with its medieval churches, holds a festival every September for kolokasi, the local taro root. On the coast at Liopetri, the fishing boats come into a small river shelter.
The sea is warm from June into October. Spring brings wildflowers to Cape Greco, and Kataklysmos, the festival of the flood, falls at Pentecost in late May or June.
