Villas between the pine-backed beaches and the hills of southern Tuscany, from Alberese and Talamone to the countryside around Grosseto
As featured in
The Maremma is the Tuscany most visitors from Florence never reach. It was a malarial marsh for centuries, drained over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it still feels a little untamed: long beaches backed by umbrella pines, a coastal nature park where cowboys called butteri still herd long-horned cattle, and hill towns carved out of volcanic tufa. The Romans have long since found it, and they spend their summers here.
Our Maremma collection runs to 70+ villas, most of them in the province of Grosseto. There are country houses among the olive groves around Campagnatico, Buriano and Montemassi, larger villas with sea views and pools near Marina di Grosseto, and grand properties on the hills above Alberese and Talamone.
Below you will find the coast, the hill towns and the right months to come.

North of Grosseto, Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia have broad sandy beaches with pine woods behind them. Castiglione has a small fishing harbour and a walled old town climbing to its castle.
South of the city lies the Parco Regionale della Maremma, reached from Alberese. Trails cross the Monti dell'Uccellina to wild beaches and old watchtowers, and you are as likely to meet wild boar or fallow deer as other walkers. The butteri still work the cattle here on horseback. At the park's southern edge, Talamone is a fortified fishing village where Garibaldi's Thousand stopped for supplies in 1860 on their way to Sicily.

Monte Argentario was once an island. It is now tied to the mainland by two sandbars, with the lagoon town of Orbetello between them, and flamingos wade in the lagoon in winter. Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are smart harbour towns, Caravaggio died at Porto Ercole in 1610, and ferries leave Porto Santo Stefano for the island of Giglio.
A little further south, Capalbio is a walled hilltop village that fills each summer with Roman politicians and writers. Nearby is Niki de Saint Phalle's Giardino dei Tarocchi, a hillside of huge, mirrored sculptures based on the tarot, open from spring to autumn.

Inland, Pitigliano sits on a sheer tufa cliff. Its old Jewish community earned it the name Little Jerusalem, and the synagogue can still be visited. Nearby Sovana has Etruscan tombs and the vie cave, sunken roads cut deep into the rock.
At Saturnia, the Cascate del Mulino send warm, sulphurous water over pale limestone terraces, free and open all year. To the north, Massa Marittima has one of the finest cathedral squares in Tuscany. Closer to Grosseto, the castle village of Montemassi is traditionally said to be the one besieged in the famous Guidoriccio fresco in Siena's Palazzo Pubblico.

Maremma cooking is country food. There is acquacotta, a vegetable soup with bread and egg, and tortelli filled with ricotta and spinach. Wild boar turns up in many forms, and from Orbetello comes bottarga, cured mullet roe. The local red is Morellino di Scansano, made mostly from Sangiovese.
Late May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, quiet roads and easy tables. In August the Italians arrive in force, especially around Ferragosto on 15 August. In Massa Marittima, the Balestro del Girifalco crossbow contest is held on the fourth Sunday of May and on 14 August. Our concierge can book tables, wine tastings and guided walks in the park.

With 70+ properties in the Maremma, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Restaurant tables in Capalbio and Porto Ercole, guided walks in the Maremma park, rides with the butteri at Alberese, wine tastings around Scansano, boat days from Porto Santo Stefano and transfers from Rome or Pisa. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
For beaches, stay near Marina di Grosseto or Castiglione della Pescaia. For the nature park and quieter coast, choose Alberese and Talamone. The hills around Grosseto, Campagnatico and Montemassi suit those who want countryside with the sea still within easy reach.
Late May, June and September offer warm weather, a swimmable sea and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and lively, with August especially busy with Italian holidaymakers. Spring and autumn are best for walking in the Parco della Maremma.
