Where two deserts meet, and the night sky does the rest

Two deserts meet at Joshua Tree. Up in the higher, cooler Mojave, the shaggy, many-armed trees that gave the place its name grow in loose forests. Lower down, the Colorado Desert takes over with creosote and cholla. In between lie great heaps of golden granite boulders, stacked as if by a careless giant. The park covers nearly 800,000 acres, became a national park in 1994, and in 2017 was named an International Dark Sky Park. The nights are half the reason to come.

Our collection runs to 70+ villas in the towns along the park's northern edge. They range from cottages and cabins with hot tubs to larger houses of up to 8 bedrooms with pools, saunas and long mountain views. Out here the neighbours are usually a fair way off, and the sky is enormous.

Below is a guide to the towns, the park and the best months to come.

The National Park

Granite, yuccas and a view to the San Andreas Fault

The west entrance sits just outside Joshua Tree town. From there, Park Boulevard winds through the best of the Joshua tree forests and boulder country. Hidden Valley makes a fine first walk: a short loop inside a ring of rocks once said to have hidden cattle rustlers. Skull Rock looks exactly as its name suggests.

Keys View, at around 1,580 metres, looks across the Coachella Valley to the San Andreas Fault. Further south and lower down, the Cholla Cactus Garden is at its best in the low light of early morning. Climbers come from all over the world for the thousands of routes on the granite, and our concierge can book a guide for a first try.

Yucca Valley & Pioneertown

Supplies, saloon fronts and a famous roadhouse

Yucca Valley is the most practical base. It has supermarkets, restaurants and a growing number of vintage shops along Highway 62. A short drive up into the hills is Pioneertown, built in 1946 as a living film set for Westerns, with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry among its backers. Mane Street still has its frontier façades and an old bowling alley.

The real draw is Pappy & Harriet's, a barbecue roadhouse in the old cantina set. It has become one of the most loved small music venues in California, and Robert Plant has played there. If a band you know is on the bill, book well ahead.

Twentynine Palms & the Desert Fringes

Homestead cabins, sound baths and outsider art

Twentynine Palms stands at the park's north entrance, a low-slung town with murals painted on its walls. East of it, Wonder Valley is a wide, empty basin scattered with small homestead cabins from the middle of the last century. Some have been restored and many are slowly returning to the sand.

Closer to Joshua Tree town, the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum fills ten acres or so of desert with sculpture made from salvaged materials. Up at Landers, the Integratron, a white dome built in the 1950s by George Van Tassel, holds sound baths that people drive a long way for.

Seasons & the Table

Spring blooms, cold clear nights and mesquite smoke

Spring is the high season. In a wet year the wildflowers usually come between March and May. Autumn is warm, settled and quieter. Summer days often pass 38°C, so walks are best done at dawn and the afternoons beside the pool. Winter brings bright days and nights that can fall below freezing, which is hot tub weather.

Food out here is unfussy and good: mesquite barbecue at Pappy & Harriet's, Mexican cooking along Highway 62, and date shakes from the Coachella Valley farms on the road up from Palm Springs. Our concierge can arrange stargazing guides, climbing days, restaurant tables and transfers.

Why book your Joshua Tree villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Joshua Tree's villas are spread across a great deal of open desert, some at the end of long dirt roads, and we know which are a short drive from the park entrances and which offer real solitude. With 70+ properties in Joshua Tree, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Stargazing guides, climbing guides in the park, sound baths at the Integratron, tables at Pappy & Harriet's, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Palm Springs or Los Angeles. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
