Baroque chapels, buried cities and a seafront ridge
The historic centre of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Spaccanapoli, the long straight street that splits it in two, is the place to start. Go out of your way for the Cappella Sansevero and its marble Veiled Christ. The National Archaeological Museum holds the mosaics and frescoes taken from Pompeii and Herculaneum, so it makes sense to see it before the ruins.
Posillipo is the green ridge west of the centre, where Neapolitans have built seaside villas since Roman times. A house here puts the city twenty minutes away with the bay below you, which is about as good a combination as Naples offers.

Lemon terraces, olive groves and the tip of the bay
Most of our villas are on the peninsula that closes off the southern side of the bay. Piano di Sorrento and Sant'Agnello are flat and easy, close to the trains and ferries. Priora sits in the hills above Sorrento, cooler and with long views.
Massa Lubrense, further out, is quieter and greener. Its lanes lead down to Marina del Cantone and Nerano for a long lunch by the water, and out to Punta Campanella, a protected marine area facing Capri. The walk down to the Bay of Ieranto is one of the finest on the coast.

Ischia's hot springs and Capri's cliffs
Ischia is the larger and more relaxed of the two islands, and it is volcanic, with thermal springs and spa gardens all over it. Forio, on the west coast, has La Mortella, the garden made by the composer William Walton and his wife Susana. Sant'Angelo is a small car-free fishing village on a little headland in the south.
Capri needs no introduction. It is busiest at midday, when the day-trippers arrive, so staying overnight means you get the island to yourself in the evening. Ferries and hydrofoils link Naples and Sorrento with both islands.

Pizza, sfogliatelle and a September miracle
The Neapolitan pizzaiuolo's craft is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and once you have eaten pizza here you will see why. Have a sfogliatella with your morning coffee, and order spaghetti alla Nerano, with courgettes and provolone, on the peninsula. Finish with a glass of limoncello made from Sorrento lemons.
May, June, September and October are the best months, warm enough for the sea without August's heat and crowds.
