A town built on a staircase, facing the sea
Positano drops down a steep ravine to the sea in a jumble of pink, ochre and white houses, with the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta at the bottom and the Lattari mountains behind. It began as a fishing village, became a bohemian retreat in the 1950s, and is now the most photographed town on the Amalfi Coast. In Positano you get about on foot, and a great many of those steps go uphill.

Where to stay, and how many steps it costs
Most of Positano's life happens around Spiaggia Grande, the main beach, where the ferries come in and the lanes up from the church are lined with linen shops, cafés and lemon stalls. Staying close to the centre means dinner without a climb, but it also means summer crowds beneath your terrace.
A short cliff path leads west to Fornillo, a smaller beach with a more easy-going crowd. To the east, Arienzo and Laurito sit along the road towards Praiano, with coves at the bottom of long flights of steps and boats shuttling guests along the shore. Ask us how many steps lie between a villa and the road before you fall for the view.

Above the town, a quieter Positano
High on the mountainside, Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle feel a world away from the beach, though the town is only a short drive or a long walk down. Villas up here give you cooler evenings, birdsong and the widest views on the coast, out to Capri on a clear day.
Nocelle is where the Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods, ends. The walk starts at Bomerano, in Agerola, and follows a high ledge above the sea for around three hours. It is best walked in spring or autumn, early in the morning, finishing with a cold drink in Nocelle before the steps down to Positano.

Boats, islands and lunch along the coast
The sea is the best way to see this coast. Ferries run in season from Positano to Amalfi, Salerno, Sorrento and Capri, and a private boat lets you set your own day: a swim off the Li Galli islands, linked in legend to the sirens, lunch on a beach reachable only by water, then back along the cliffs as the town lights up.
Praiano, next along the coast, is quieter and less steep, and makes a good base if you want Positano within easy reach without staying in it.

Lemons, scialatielli and a summer feast
The table here is simple and very good: scialatielli with clams, totani e patate, a squid and potato dish of the coast, grilled fish, and delizia al limone made with the fat, fragrant Amalfi lemons. Finish with a glass of limoncello on the terrace.
May, June and September give warm seas without the crush. On 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, the town celebrates its patron with processions and fireworks over the bay.
